I wouldn't buy the shares purely based on getting the payout from the sale. As others have said the share price will drop to compensate for it. If you are looking at amounts like £800 do you have any other investments? If you invest in a FTSE tracker then you get a big exposure to VOD anyway.

On your last point I think you have misunderstood their statement. Half the money will be distributed to investors which could be private investors or fund managers. The remainder will be used to invest in the VOD network or to buy other businesses. I'm not aware that they are just giving it to fund managers to look after

i think woody means that the cash and Verizon shares will be distributed to private investors and institutional investors

Aren't they doing a 1 for 2 share consolidation as well? So if the dividend is staying at 11p it is effectively being halved.
