back boiler ,pipes banging

I have an open fire a back boiler .It heats the radiators upstairs ,there is no pump to heat downstairs .

The fire had not been lit for many years ,but as the back boiler heater the pipes started to bang .It did heat the radiators but not the hot water cylinder .

Has anyone any idea how I fix this and how much it will cost .

  • I would honestly call a boiler repair person in your local area and describe exactly as you do here. The reason why I say that type of repair is something that often varies on many factors.

Lastly, anything that is open fire can be extremely dangerous, so be careful.

If you're in the Fort Collins area, try taking a look a Allen Service in Colorado.

Its probably kettling, where the water is locally boiling within the heat exchanger. this is usually die to mineral (limescale) in teh exchanger.
Try reducing the temp on the dial until it reduces.
Theres no problem with it doing it, but it is anoying.
Only way to fix it is to get either the heat exchanger replaced, or more likely a new modern boiler

SK240 .... ITS A BACK BOILER ! heated from an OPEN FIRE !

If it hasn't been used for some time sludge could well have blocked the boiler, the noise would be steam being produced inside the pipe work and boiler. Steam build up if that is the case can be very dangerous and could lead to an explosion rupturing the casting and showering you and the room it hot scalding water etc.

I would strongly advise you seek a plumber to take a look at the system until then I personally would not light it, there have been incidents of this nature in recent years causing the boilers to explode.
