Nothing but pantomines outside of London!

I'm looking at places for me and my boyfriend to go away to for my birthday, which is in early December.

I was thinking a UK City break - hotel and show. But I'm really struggling to find any theatres that are showing anything other than tacky pantomines in the weekends around it, except for the obvious West End ones and we're not really interested in London.

Does anyone know of any events that we could go to? Rather than just hotel and meal out for our weekend away?

I was looking at things like Cirque de Soleil or Circus of Horrors but that gets taken over by pantos as well! I get that they're put on for kids and they're massive money makers but it's so frustrating haha!

Are you in to muscials ?

Manchester Palace Theatre has West Side story from 10th December until early January

Liverpool Empire has Cats for a fortnight until 7th December

Both interesting cities to spend a weekend in ....
  • Don't know if you are into ballet, The Nutcracker is on at Birmingham Hippodrome from 22 Nov - 12 Dec

Miracle on 34th Street is showing at the New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham from 5 - 7 Dec.

A Christmas Carol is showing at The Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 27 Nov - 4 Jan.

Don't know if any of these would be interest to you, but good luck in finding something suitable.

Birmingham Royal Ballet's Nutcracker (at the Hippodrome) is one of the most beautiful productions, even if you don't know if you're into ballet or not! It's seasonal, but not a kids panto for sure.

I was lucky to see BRB's production 6 times at the O2 when I was working there - still brings a tear to my eye! I strongly suggest it's worth a special night.
  • I didn't know Cats was playing in Liverpool. I saw it many years ago, and to this day it is one of my favourite shows. I think I might just be tempted to book tickets for my family :D

Liverpool also has plenty to do during the day, and most of the museums are free if the OP enjoys visiting them. As a family, we have been to them many times, but still enjoy them. There is also the Beatles Experience, Albert Dock, lots of shopping, plenty of places to eat, etc.

There is a lot on other than pantomimes in a lot of places in the UK in the first weekend of December.

Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh for starters. Google is your friend!

LOVE musicals, these are the type of things I'm looking for! We saw Cats quite recently on tour in Wolverhampton so would be last resort but West Side Story would be interesting!

I think I'd have a really hard time convincing my boyfriend to go see the ballet and it's not really my kinda thing either! Thanks anyway though :)

Don't know if it's any help, but I work with plenty of big burly rock'n'roll crowd who would never have dreamt of going to the ballet. Many became converts over that run. It's one of the most accessible ballets, full of tunes you know, and if nothing else you can enjoy the staging! It's a musical without words and better dancing, very simple story, etc. Leave him at home if he's resistant to trying something new, take a girlfriend instead ;)
