Secure key comes to First Direct

http://www1.firstdirect.com/1/2/securekey?wt.mc=FSDT_eN2fa2013

Oh for f**ks sake. I'm off to Santander.

You have the option to use the account without it, but then you can't actually do much with internet banking anymore.

At least they have a mobile app version.

I thought I'd had a lucky escape with my FD account when HSBC introduced the secure key.. Guess it was invertible as they are part of HSBC.. Guess it bye bye FD...

You can't actually do much without it?

    You won't be able to
set up payments to new beneficiaries and new standing orders
How often do you do that exactly? For me its rare.

create and send a secure message
I find it easier to just phone them and get an instant reply.

    edit contact details
order replacement card, new PIN number
Again, how often are you going to be changing your contact details?
Ordering replacement cards or PIN numbers is better over the phone.

It looks like you can pretty much run the account without it.

Saying that, once it comes into force, I'll just download the digital version of the SecureKey to my phone.

I pay new beneficiaries often. Every time I open a new bank account.

I don't think I could be bothered with First Direct's new system but maybe I can get by without it. I usually only add new beneficiaries when returning deposits to tenants, I suppose I could just get my wife to do that from her bank account then pay her.

"Your first option is a Digital Secure Key, accessed through the Banking on the go App on your smartphone."

Unless of course you have a Windows smartphone is which case there is no app so tough!

I have to say I use HSBC, and I hate secure key. But I use it, as I do international banking with them.

It will be goodbye FD from me (Although will wait until I have been with them the full 6 months before leaving and will hopefully get £100)
I can't stand the secure keys - I like to be able to do all my banking whereever I am and don't want to carry round a lot of secure keys (I currently suffer the Nationwide card reader - but only because I want the 5% interest!)

Santander have the best system imo. If you try to pay someone new they send you a text with a passcode, otherwise you can log in and bank unhindered.

I would have never left FD to get higher interest on my current account elsewhere but I suppose when FD force me to move at least I will get something out of it. I have been with them since they started in the early 90's.

  • Very, very annoying - I only joined them a few months ago, and as I'm planning to apply for a mortgage in the next few months I'm loathe to change current account again as I don't want that on my credit record, but the secure key may be the straw that breaks the camels back.

I have to say though, that I really don't understand the plaudits they get for customer services - they've been hopeless with me. I left Cahoot because they didn't handle a lost card particularly well but in general they were far better than FD have been for me. Their online banking is an absolute horror show too.
