Weak shower

Hello there,

We've been suffering with a weak shower since we started renting the place, but it was usable, it seems to have gotten worse since we came back from holiday. Not sure what could have changed.

It's a mixer shower running off hot and cold taps, no kind of pump or anything. It's not the shower head as I descaled that recently.

Any idea what sort of things I could check, the only thing that I've done is turning off and on the water for the holiday, or tips to improve shower flow?

Did you fully open the stop tap? Try closing and opening a few times.

  • It's definitley fully open. Flow from other taps is fine.

Can you post a photo of your shower or the model number?

This happened to me last week. Also after a short holiday. Not sure if this is the correct way of solving it, but it worked for me.

Using an adjustable spanner, I took the shower hose of from the taps. I then poured toilet cleaner ( a lime scale one) down the hose. (Wear gloves) Left it for 1 minute then re-attached, and turned both taps on full to fully rinse out cleaner.

Worth checking thanks. Have tried removing hose from taps and struggled despite it being easy in past so maybe it has blocked up in there. Will have another go

EDIT: managed to take it off, but I don't seem to have anything specific for limescale. Would vinegar do, don't have huge amount of it.

    Do you mean like this?

    or perhap like this:?

    or what?

What is your water supply system? Do you have a combi boiler with both H&C at mains pressure or do you have a cold water storage tank and a hot water cylinder with a conventional or system boiler or do you have a thermal store with a conventional or system boiler so that hot is at mains pressure or are you electic only relying on an immersion heater in the HWC?

Turning the stop c o c k of will have had zero effect on the second option. The cold tank provides a break between the supply and the feeds direct to cold taps and to replenish the hot cylinder as hot is drawn off.

Clogged filter probably. The feed pipes usually terminate in a mesh filter that looks like a miniature thimble. This can become clogged with dirt in the water pipes. You will have to dismantle the shower assembly to get at the filters.

If they are clogged then just rinse them out. To stop them clogging up so quickly in the future you'll need to flush the pipework for 20-30 minutes.

I had a very similar problem a few years ago and I called a plumber who diagnosed blocked filters in the shower unit. He cleaned them up and flushed the pipework for 30 minutes and the shower was then back to normal.

As other have asked, what is the make and model of the shower?

The filters are usually at the cold and hot feeds at the point where the thermostatic valve mixes the two feeds.

C'mon guys. Why automatically assume a thermo shower? Thats not what the OP has actually described thus far.

It's like the top one. The mixer.

We've got hot water tank and water tank in the loft. Think it's conventional boiler - Ideal Classic

Ah okay, my guess would be a kink in the plastic tube inside the metal spiral pipe.
