Affordable Smartphone to get Organised

I have managed to avoid a smartphone for years but since I retired my Palm Pilot I have become more disorganised.

Can anyone recommend an affordable smartphone that can act as an organiser, with an affordable tariff that allows to cheaply text my American fianc!e and that I can use even after I put the chain back on my bicycle?

Apart from acting as organiser the other most useful feature would be mapping software with GPS location, occasional internet use and exceptional use of something like Skype.

I currently pay less the £12 a month and I have the funds to buy a phone outright if this is the cheaper option.
