Are cigarettes different strength in different countries? If so, and you bought them in Tunisia I wouldn't have thought they were unfit for purpose if that's how they are sold in Tunisia.

If, for example I buy an ipod in a foreign country which uses a different voltage and I charge it in the UK and it blows up, it does not mean it's unfit for purpose as it was designed for a different country.[/QUOTE]

Yes they are, in fact the safest brand to buy is actually Marlboro. I am a none smoker too, i just lived abroad that is how i know from smokers who were my fiends.

You would need to buy a converter so it would work in the UK,

Nope, you're wrong. Many products and, in particular, cigarettes, differ in characteristics from country to country. The example you cite - Coca Cola - is a particularly poor example, as it is notorious for tasting differently, depending on the country. Where I live, for example, it tastes very different because of the use of natural cane sugar, as opposed to High Fructose Corn Syrup. I am a non-smoker, and I'm shocked that you are apparently unaware of the vast differences in taste that occur in cigarettes around the world. There is a large difference even between the tobacco used in the US and that used in the UK.

I would totally agree with this post. In the southern far east the Coke is made to a far sweeter recipe than ours and our normal instant coffee is far stronger out there - wish i could import it - Sprite (could be 7Up) is like syrup. Even MacDonald's which is supposed to be the same the world over is radically different.

its the chance you take when buying ciggies duty free, specially from african/middle eastern/ eastern european countries

i get a regular supply of DF ciggies from various people (naughty i know but saves me money) and on the odd occasion i get the odd 200 that taste different from the rest (depends on the supplier tbh)
my most regular lady gets the ciggies from spain and never had a problem, but got some from a woman in work (think she got them from somewhere like dubai) and as much as they are smokable they arent the same

    but thems the breaks imo

    Duty free ciggs taste awful.

My gorgeous golden pack of B & H taste completely different in every country I have travelled to.

The duty free B&H sold here in the airports taste awful too.

But then again, I have given / giving up.

Basically the cigarettes weren't fit for purpose

The purpose of cigarettes being to make you cough and give you lung cancer?

No its not rocket science - products DO vary from country to country. Coca-cola does, heinz beans do (far more sugar in scottish ones then english) and cigarettes do - the fact is they are not unfit for purpose, just maybe unfit for your purpose but again thats your fault. You say you have sampled this brand in some european countries - well done, european products like this will tend to be very similar, due mainly that they will be manufactured in only 1 or 2 places. However products from a different continent will cater for different tastes.

And that is a relevant part of the argument - the company should find nothing wrong with the product.

Ciggies are different in different countries... if you've EVER bought Malboros in Amsterdam you'll notice that the nicotine and tar levels are different..... and these are the levels that will vary from country to country, on guidelines and directives. I've been smoking Asian ciggies for the last week and have a different "feel" about them than ones I buy here.

It's the same with Coke in the US - it's about 10 times more sugar than Western Europe.

Most strengths such as the different levels of nicotine, tar, etc would be on the label of the pack (even on the bulky duty free ones) and that would be up to you to check.

The only way a ciggi would be unfit for purpose would be if they all had tears or holes in the cig itself before the filter so that you cannot inhale the smoke properly and escapes through the hole, or they're all wet.

I have never smoked..but my family have always maintained that the duty free cigarettes purchased abroad are stonger and "rough". Different countries will have different laws that determine the sort of additives that can be used etc. While you were in Tunisia did you have coffee...I noticed that it said they used Nescafe but it was so strong you could stand your spoon in it! The country will cater for the tastes ofits own people. I can appreciate your frustration..but I think a refund is the maximum you can expect..and I do not think it would legally be required - your personal lpreference does not make the cigarettes "not fit for the purpose!"
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

OK, maybe i wasn't as clear as i could have been. What i was trying to say was this...if you like coke, and you pay money to buy a can of coke, wherever in the world you are, you expect it to taste pretty much like coke! You dont expect it to taste like Dr Pepper!
The cigarettes i bought didn't taste like lucky Strike's, they tasted like asbestos! (no i dont know what asbestos tastes like before you ask!), and gave you such a bad chest the next day, so in my opinion weren't fit for purpose.
The person in customer services told me not to smoke any more of them as there had been problems with that brand in Tunisia. Whatever this meant i dont yet know as they wouldn't tell me further. I can only guess they suspect they're counterfeit, or they know of a problem that occurred somewhere in the manufacturing process. Anyway, i've sent them off now so i'll let you all know the outcome when i have some news.
If i was a little combatent in my earlier posts i apologise, i just dont like people being judgmental when they know nothing about me only the fact i smoke! Yes i know it's killing me, but do i judge YOU for putting too much salt on your dinner, or eating too much fat, sugar, not enough fruit, the fact you dont exercise, drink too much! i could go on, but hopefully you see my point?

and gave you such a bad chest the next day, so in my opinion weren't fit for purpose.

I haven't smoked for 3 and a half years now. I smoked for 10 years in total. I gave up after 6 then started again. When I restarted the next morning I had a bad chest the next day. Not much of a surprise really! Cigarettes and chests don't really mix. Ok you may become use to it. I'm not really sure how 'fit for purpose' fits in? Are cigarettes suppose to be good for your lungs/chest?

I think perhaps you should choose another phrase instead of 'fit for purpose'

I take it basically they were too strong. It's more 'you didn't like them'.

'Not fit for purpose' seems to become one of those default 'I'm not happy about a product' phrases. I think that often though when people come up with these default phrases whether they've really put much thought into whether it actually accurately describes a situation. They just simply use it because they think it sounds good.
