by menu in the monitor, i mean the monitor has a physical button to access sub menu's just like a tv for colour contrast etc. even though its blank, there is power to the menu.

im woundering if you have a onbourd VGA issue like drivers or failure of onbourd VGA chip malfunction, it could also be a bootmgr issue aswell.

have tried resetting your bios on the mobo, locating the C_MOS jumper and removing it (with pc unplugged from the mains) and then putting it back on the same pins it come from, or removing the battery from the mobo with power out from wall and waiting a few mins before you put it back in and boot back up, this will put the bios back to stock if you if you accidentally made a mistake or a new bios update muddled things up.

do you have a packard bell boot recovery disc?

I have tried pressing all the buttons on the monitor at the bottom but nothing seems to get me into the menu, not sure if there is another way?

I think it might be software related, i was wondering if re-install of windows might work?

I havent tried the CMOS_jumper or the CMOS battery yet, i will give that a go and report back.

the screen is packard bell the pc is an ebuyer custom build, i dont think i have a recovery disk for the pc, i might somewhere. But i have windows xp on disk anyway so thats not a problem.

    thanks

The OP states that the monitor WORKS on a KNOWN good computer. Can you confirm?

The OP states that the computer uses shared memory, confirm please?

If so, you need to set the BIOS up to not use shared or use a memory checker, or replace the memory, one sim at a time if needs be.

It would be rare for 2-3 monitors to have the same fault, I've fixed hundreds, and never heard of this, always video card/memory in the computer, so either the OP is getting confused, that monitors work in known good machines, or those machines dont have faulty shared memory??

If the invertor in the screen was broken, then no screen, if the flo tubes were faulty, then see a ghost image...

If people post with conflicting information, then it is very difficult to diagnose the fault. One post says they work on another computer, and another contradicts. Can you either eliminate the monitor fault; or say its a computer fault? Have you used a known good monitor on your computer? It seems strange that you have tried 2-3, and they all have a fault that I've not come across in 20 years. But memory issues in a computer are ten a penny, that cause monitor issues.

The dell and the EDGE IO dont work on any machine or laptop.

Shared memory meaning it uses the onboard motherboard as a graphics card?.......yes it does. it does not have its own independant graphics card.

i am using a known good monitor on the same computer that has had problems with the dell and the EDGE IO. i have tried different known working vga cables with monitors and they dont work. i have taken the monitors to a freinds house and they dont work and also tried them on my laptop and they dont work.

    no ghosting issues

the machines all work fine, they have no faults. the only machine i think might be causing the problem is the one im using now (the ebuyer one) BUT it is working fine with the packard bell monitor.....and thats why im confused!

can you explain the memory thing a bit further please? do i go into the bios screen and change it not to share the memory and then take out the RAM from its slots and replace?

    thanks

Can you confirm that any monitor works on your system or not?

    Yes / no

Your compy uses main memory as video memory, and if it is faulty causes crashes, or screen issues. But I'm confused if you decided that 3 faulty screens were tested independantly?? You contradict yourself in everything you post.
SIMPLE QUESTIONS: Do any of the monitors work on a friends compy?
Does a known working monitor work on your computer?
Due to updating your BIOS, have you updated the motherboard drivers?

You can turn off shared video memory sharing in BIOS, the above questions are Yes No answer. You keep changing your mind!

OP has already said they have run a test of the dell and edge monitors on other laptops and systems on no joy to getting them to turn on.

yes the packardbell monitor works OK.

Do you think a re-install of windows xp might be a good idea for when i get a new monitor?

My fear here is this happening over and over...

i could be worth a try if you not to panicky about losing data stored to the HD simply back your photo's etc to a disc first.

got the motherboard makers website look for downloads and download the drivers for your make and model mobo, then burn those to disc as youll need them like the network driver sound driver VGA drivers chipset drivers make sure they are latest update releases.

I am thinking about doing it, its either that or get a seperate cheap graphics card with VGA, DVI and HDMI ports?

Can you recommend a cheap graphics card that is compatable with my motherboard and PSU please? Because last time i was going to upgrade i was told that my motherboard/power supply couldnt handle the power of the graphics card

    Thanks
  • you require a PCI-E x16 GFX card, low budget ones tend to be about the same or worse than onbourd GFX interface.

youll need to upgrade your PSU for optimum wattage to run a decent one, that has 6 pin gfx power socket cable.

    something like http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/cxs500w-uk.html

    to power something like, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-286-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2392

From your testing it looks unlikely it's that the monitor doesn't work with the refresh rate or resolution. So, I suspect bad capacitors in the power supply, as this is a common cause for flat screen monitors and TVs turning on for only a moment before going blank. Even some quite new screens have bad capacitors. Often you can take the screen apart and easily see that the capacitors are bad because they're bulging and/or leaking.
