I know what you mean. I got to Grade 6 (Drum Kit) at school, but had to work really hard to get there. I am very rusty and need to practice my rudiments and basic timing. The lad who is in the office next to me onboard is a pipe drummer. Now Ive never really listened to it and he very very 'tight' He has a practice pad. One for future patrols me thinks.

I'm cruel with my students on time, the best way is to set a click at 40bpm to start with and sit there for 5 mins on the snare, if I hear one click, time starts again. then turn off the click but keep playing after 5 mins turn it on again and see if you're tight. once you have that sorted, move to 60, then 80 etc. For years I slept with a click running at various bpms to help them stick.

You can get a good time feel from tapping out the drum part while listening to cds, but in all honesty it's never perfect because loads of drummys aren't that great. But you'll be amazed how with a bit of playing it all comes back, the chances are your independence might be a bit rusty, your muscles will certainly need building up again, but once you know your rudiments it doesn't take long to get them right.

Do you read? I guess if you did grade 6 you do. I'm amazed at how many students don't see the point, and if you're just going to play in one band, same tunes, one style then I suppose you don't need to. I'm a session muso which means i can be called to do anything, rock one day, salsa the next, animation, tv, jazz, big band, you name it. So sight reading is so important, I do sometimes get a cd to transcribe before a session, once in a blue moon I get a chart. Usually it's a case of what do you think? I was thinking a bossanova/ shuffle etc etc so I have to know everything on the spot, either that or here’s the chart now play that (perfectly first take or you get sacked)

I'm trying to get my percussion a bit better. I'm no percussionist but I do love all the toys. I've got a set of congas which I play with now and then, the odd shaker and a few odds and ends, but I'd love to master it all. Don't suppose it'll ever happen though.

Don’t give it up though lenny, you’re more than welcome to have a copy of my course, it’s bloody tough but it will make a session drummer out of you.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
    My meals today:

Bowl of mueslie (sp?) with semi-skimmed milk, cup of tea
    500ml bottle of water
    Coffee
    2 glasses of fizzy water
Egg mayonnaise sandwich on brown bread
    Cup of tea
    poached salmon salad
    peach and handful of blueberries
    Glass of diet coke
    Cup of tea
Not too bad a start. Am intending on measuring myself tonight (as I need to fit into bridal dress).

Won't be able to weigh myself until the weekend as I don't have scales at OHs house!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Don't mind you asking at all - I was 41.. I always wanted four but had severe PND after no 3 which resulted in psychiatric care, so was terrified of having another. I told myself that if I still wanted a baby after 10 years I would go ahead and try. It took ages to get pregnant again (but mainly cos OH worked away most of the time), then I had a miscarriage and got pregnant again straight away.

So I was a little older than I expected to be, but I wouldn't change it for the world now. The older kids love her and I am a much more relaxed parent now.. ANd no PND at all, mainly thanks to the three health visitors I had keeping an eye on me.
