Well, if you go via MSE then MSE gets the referral money - that's how the site is funded. If you go via quidco then quidco gets the referral money and gives you part of it.

You can't cancel the application process if you've already applied and got a decision.

You could always close the account and apply again. Depends how quickly you need it open.

How ignorant I am, i'd only ever had cashback once before when I switched power co through mse and got an extra bonus, I was unaware there was a site which aggregated cashback offers. I'd never realised any of that mse stuff you mention and only realised Moneysupermarket owned mse when the link didn't work earlier today. It explains a lot now so you can't take things at face value like you used to be able to before Martin sold it. Bit of a betrayal there I think without any caveat on the present site, thank god for the forum.

I've applied for a 2nd a/c through quidco and just wont sign when I get the papers for the first one, phew.

Thanks to Archi Bald, a new avenue of savings has opened up to me because of your post.

Well, the way I understand it at least, moneysupermarket bought a successful business where previously they were paying money to MSE for anyone that clicked through to moneysupermarket through MSE. The editorial code, the content of what they say, remains unchanged and, according to what was released at the time, there are big penalties if MSE change course because of pressures from moneysupermarket.

But yes, the forum is a fantastic resource.

The site has always worked that way, long before moneysupermarket were ever involved.

There are asterisks beside every paid link referring to a large caveat at the bottom of every page explaining how the site is funded. For example, from the best current accounts page that has the 123 account referral:
    What the * means above

If a link has a * by it, that means it is an affiliated link and therefore it helps MoneySavingExpert stay free to use, as it is tracked to us. If you go through it, it can sometimes result in a payment to the site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.
You shouldn’t notice any difference and the link will never negatively impact the product. Plus the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by these links. We aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the top deal, it is still included in exactly the same way, just with a non-paying link. For more details, read How This Site Is Financed.
Duplicate links of the * links above for the sake of transparency, but this version doesn't help MoneySavingExpert.com: First Direct, Leeds BS, Nationwide FlexAccount, Nationwide FlexDirect, Nationwide FlexPlus, Nationwide Select Credit Card, Santander 123

surely in days of old it would have advised signing up via topcashback (£47.50) or quidco (£45) if moneysupermarket wasn't offering any cashback?

How would MSE make any money and continue to exist as a business if it told everyone to apply for affiliated products via another website?
