Wifi & data usage on Nokia lumia 520

Hi, please bear with me if this is a silly question. I am looking to buy this phone, (as I have windows 8 on laptop). will I need to have a data allowance on my monthly contract, or will the BT Broadband I have at home be sufficient?

    If you use the phone on your own or any other wifi, this is totally independent of the mobile network.

    So if you will only use mobile data occasionally, and have application settings to not update and synchronise everything over mobile data but wait until wifi is available [though I don't know if this applies to these phones], you could probably manage with a modest allowance
