Whos running the oldest PC?

  • We had a BBC Micro Model B (with upgraded RAM) in regular use around 2000, until the power supply failed shortly after it was replaced by x86 laptop running Windows ME. The said laptop was used until 2012 when the power supply failed.

To my left is an Acorn RiscPC brought in 1994 that was in regular use until about 2004, I upgraded the operating system this week.

My current desktop was brought in 1999 but the only case and keyboard are original, the second motherboard and CPU was in use for about 8 years from 2004 to 2013.

When I started work in 2005, they had plenty 386 PCs running Windows 3.11 and the Citrix client.

The computers on-board Voyager 2 are serious contenders for record for continuous operation without repairs, 36 years, 24 days so far.

Mine isn't the oldest (8 year old Dell Dimension 3000)

When I tried to post a new thread for help earlier I got a 'Your request has been blocked' message from forum which only added to my woes:(.

Error message on PC 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System'

Tried rebooting in safe mode to last known good configuration but get same message. Microsoft support says use original CD Rom which I don't have as OS (XP) was preinstalled.

Can anyone advise what I should try please - in simple terms for a non techie:o

(Also, any idea why I was blocked as I seem to be able to reply to existing posts)

    Thanks in anticipation

Oldest pc i have is one i built myself around ten years ago.
Spec something along the lines of AMD Athlon 1700, 512mb ram etc.
And one of the first dvd re-writers, cost around £450 alone.

Still have receipts for it totalling up to about £3000 :(

Annoys me that my £200 shop bought pc i now use is light years ahead of the system above.

    badger, your profile is corrupt

backup with a linux bootcd and factory restore is an easy solution, instructions at the end of the speedup sticky

    or

go into f8, and do system restore or chkdsk c: /F

remove em32 from your post to start a new thread.

    corrupt profile?

When I go into F8 there is an option 'Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only) is that the one?

I'll have a look at the speedup sticky
