Can you help me....because Lloyds can't.

Hi,

I've noticed recently a lot of people are getting these contactless cards and I decided that I would like one. On the website it says you have to go into a branch to order a new one. I popped into the local branch on my lunch break, ordered a contactless card and then waited. About 5 days later, a brand new normal debit card arrives at my flat. I go to the branch again, explain it, and they order me another one, this time with a printout for the order of one contactless card. Received it this morning in the post and guess what...yep, its a normal debit card.

Now I dont know wether this is just the staff being very incompetent and not knowing that maybe my account isn't eligible for this new card yet, or wether the error lies wherever they print the cards.

Could someone tell me if I am actually eligible for a contactless card. I have the plain and simple current account with Lloyds.

I'm very annoyed that I now have two new cards, I dont know which one to use and I will have the change all of my bank details on online retailers for nothing really. I understand that I would have to change them anyway with a contactless card, but at least i would have a contactless card.

Thanks for reading,
Matt

Contactless ones looks the same as a normal debit card except they have the contactless logo on it. Does yours have the logo?

Like you say, http://www.lloydstsb.com/current-accounts/debit-card/contactless.asp says go to your branch to order one so looks like a backend problem if they are supplying you ones without it.
  • It depends on if your card is an online or offline card and what type of account you have.

If your card is an online card it means it has to authorise every payment by dialing back to your bank to check if you have the available funds before authorising the payment.

An offline card doesn't have to dial home and check available funds it will authorise the amount, and can be used in Pay@pumps on planes and trains where offline transactions are the norm.

I'm guessing your card is an online card and checks to see if the funds are available before authorising a payment. This means you won't get a contactless card as these generally don't check to see if you have funds in your account before authorising a payment.

So no mater how hard you try to order a contactless card your always going to get the normal online card.

Stop going into branch and ring them up and ask to speak to the cards department.
At least you will be speaking to people who know what they are talking about.

If your current card doesn’t have contactless you can order a new one in your local branch.

And if the sales assistant behind the counter does not know what they are doing.....

Like I said. Talk to the experts. Not some sales jockey.

My card is an offline card going by what you say. I've used it at Pay@Pumps and on planes many times. I just dont understand why they aren't sending me the correct card. The second time i went in, the women even printed off the confirmation of a new contactless card.

I'm going to go into the branch tomorrow and ask them if I am actually eligible for one, if so, why am I being sent normal cards. I'm not annoyed at the time its taking to get this new technology, i'm more annoyed at the incompetence of the people in branch. They dont seem to even know the ins and outs of this new technology.

Why not save a lot of hassle (and having to call in to branch) and, as was suggested above, contact the cards department of the bank

  • I contacted Lloyds via Twitter who gave me an 0845 number to call. I cant call those numbers from my mobile and I have no landline so they gave me a 017.... number. Got through really quickly, explained what happened, the girl on the other end didn't have a clue so decided to put me on hold for 20 minutes. I then hung up. Called back and the next person told me the only reason that they can see is because i was listed as unemployed. They said I would need to go into a branch and ask to "review my account". I've done that and everything is fine now. Should be able to order a new contactless card with 5 days. I'm quite annoyed that the 4 people I spoke to in branch didn't pick up on this.

So if anyone is having the same problem, make sure you're account details are up to date.

    Thanks for the answers guys!

Sounds like they are making it up as they go along.

LBG staff are required to fill in some kind of online form to send the request to an internal department. If they don't do this, they just end up ordering non-contactless cards...

    Does that sound familiar?
