Iphone 5 dock converter

Hi,

Can someone please recommend me a cheaper then Apple product?
I just got an Iphone 5 and I already have a docking station that I used with my Iphone 4. I am trying to buy converter (from 30 pin to 8 pin one), but many of them on Ebay&Amazon say that once you use that you will only be able to control the docking station from the handset (and I have a remote as well). Some of them don't say it, but they also don't say that it will work (ie it is better version) and I don't want to waste money just to try it out.

Anyone can recommend me one that offers all the functions of the docking station once used?
Or is my only option to go for Apple's own?

Thank you

Frankly I'd be inclined to see if apples adaptor works with remote via search first. my apple adaptor works with my old plug sd card reader, but doesn't work with my old plug hdmi adaptor (one to output to tv).

so try googleing your dock make/model in regards to the apple adaptor and remote functions. I vaguely remember seeing somewhere about it, can't remember reading if it worked or not.

I was also told by apple if i bought it (sd card reader) and it didn't work, so long as I opened it carefully I could return it, but I never took them up on that offer as it did actually work.

lots of reviews on here for it. some say doesn't work, some say does, few does say allows remote control to work. Your mileage may vary.

That's quite cheap to try, but I would doubt that will work with the remote function.

There were also issues when the lightning adaptor came out about reprogramming by apple via the iOS updates, and that far eastern made "copies" could potentially stop working. Bearing in mind I read that way back when they were first released. The thing with buying "cheap" ones to try, eventually you might spend enough to have actually bought the real thing.

The reason I bought the real one for myself was purely it's official, so if it stops working via the official updates for any reason I will be !!!!!ing at them like no tomorrow :D It is also ease of use, and the fact it does just work. Aside the hdmi, I didn't expect that to work, but that's no great loss, as I usually use the ipad 2 as the media station with the old hdmi plug.

If you walk into an apple store with it all and ask, they might be able to tell, but as always it's 3rd party equipment, so we don't support it.

I haven't actually tried my ipad mini with the chronos pure dock I have with an adaptor, I should really to find out.

I have read the reviews for the official one and it seems people are not at all impressed by that one either... some say it is flimsy (spelling?) and they are worried the think will snap in half under the weight of the Iphone..?

Looking at the price of it, I might as well buy new dock for the Iphone 5 and try and sell the old one on Ebay.. It's not Bose or anything of that price... It was a present but I think it was something like £70.. new ones I like are around that price too, and I don't have a problem with whether the converters work!

This is the thing. I don't think it's flimsy. The lightning section looks like it's flimsy because it's tiny compared to the old plug. However I don't balance my ipad mini on it in a dock. Something about that just yells don't do it. Whether it can be done safely with an iphone, i dunno, not got an iphone 5 to try that.

People are still buying docks second hand for older models/iphone/itouch/classic ipod so you might be able to sell it. The thing is, the lightning connector is the way forward for apple, and whilst you might think it's there for future use, no one really knows! People thought about it for the old connector, and yet they changed it to something (imo) sleeker, smaller, easier and goes in any way you have it! I highly doubt they will be changing it any time soon either.

Probably a new dock, with a lightning connector is the way to go.
  • Remember/ be aware that when iOS7 comes out it will start giving warnings on screen each time you connect to a non-licensed dock (and all the cheap ones are non-licensed). On the basis they can tell if its licensed or not then in theory they could also block its use in the future rather than just giving you a warning.

There are plenty on eBay, most do work but inevitably the quality isnt that great. Have an unlicensed connector that works ok but need to add a support to get the cable at a certain angle otherwise the connection is flaky.

Sorry, are you talking about a dock or a convertor?
If I buy new whole docking station (non apple, but with the Iphone 5 connector) it will still pop up or are you talking just if I put the conventor into my old dock (which is non Apple)?
    Thanks

I switched to just using a 30pin Bluetooth connector that connects to my bose sound dock was about £12 from ebay (search for "bluetooth iphone dock connector")..- that way can use the bluetooth capability of the iphone \ ipad or many other Bluetooth device to play the music over a short distance..

can sit with which ever iDevice in my hand and have it stream the music just fine.. granted doesnt charge it at the same time, but avoids compatibility issues (plus mine was an earlier dock prior to the usb power change around).. so it didnt affect what I had anyway..

Just for fun I tried my iPod dock (pure chronos idock series ii) with my ipad and lightning adaptor.
It isn't steady at all, but its an iPad and not meant for that, not a phone/iPod. It does however work with my remote for it though. Mileage varies naturally. But my apple lightning adaptor works with my dock, including all remote functions.

No idea if the ios7 update pish take from apple will affect me/my dock. However seeing as I don't use the dock with the iPad, it won't affect it. Might with my iPhone 4S if I plug that in. Doubt I will do that, however. Have an iBrick (classic) for the dock.

I suspect that apple will authorise docks with their lightning adaptor. And give a nice price for it. Then probably they will block unauthorised ones in a sneaky update in the future, thus pishing off people and will back-track. Like normal. Like apple! :-D

    Thanks.
So it is between buying the convertor from Apple direct and trying it out or buying brand new music dock...
Perhaps journey to the city centre and Apple store with my dock is on order..

Also I am rubbish at putting the protective screen, will they do it for me? How much are they there anyone has any idea?
