Which washing machine?

Hi all,
I am about to buy my first ever washing machine and i'm having some difficulty choosing what is best for me, and getting lots of conflicting advice!
It will be in a basement, so noise is not an issue, atm there are only two people, but it would need to be used as a family washing machine. I'd like a good range of different settings, a good load weight and spin speed.
ultimately, i'd like something that isn't breaking down on me al the time, gets my clothes clean, and will last! I've been looking at hotpoint & samsung... my budget is up to about £550.
Any advice and experience would be great!
Thanks.

I've had a couple of Indesit washing machines which I think are good value for money. First one was second had to us and lasted ~5 years. Currently have a 9kg model which is great (as long as you have plenty of drying room!!). Plus it weighs the washing so washing time (and energy use/water) is automatically reduced for smaller loads (I think most models do that now). Came with a 1 year standard warranty and up to 5 years parts warranty.0

that sounds good...I like the idea of being able to adjust the time etc.
Does anyone know if there is a machine where you can make a personalised wash? Ie, set the temp, time, spin speed, spin time etc? or are they all pre programmed?
[forgive my idiocy, first time!

I have a LG, on that it has all the usual pre-set programmes as well as being able to set the spin speed and temperature to suit.
It also has a delay start button so you can load it up at night to finish in the morning or load it in the morning to finish when you get home from work, I use that function a lot.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
thanks, that sounds great, do you know which model that is?0

My Bosch has preset programmes but once you've selected one, you can adjust temp and spin speed (these then have an impact on duration) - and there's a couple of quick programmes too.0

When we bought we went for a Miele but were tempted by one very similar to this which comes with a 5 year parts and labour warranty.

Indesit allow you to change temp & spin speed on any programme, though you can't go any higher than it is as standard. Seems to be a standard feature on any machine these days.
Another feature to look out for is spin speed. Higher = drier (lol)0 -
Personal experience is that you're better off buying the most basic model of a high quality brand like Miele than you are buying the most costly model from a budget brand's range. There's not much difference in the price often, but due to economies of scale in manufacturing and buying, machines across a whole brand tend to contain many of the same parts and design features.0

Mines an LG direct drive one - whatever that means - washer dryer. It's been brilliant, and was about £500
I don't use the dryer lots but like to have the option, and no room for a separate one.
I love the 30min cycle - perfect for delicates and refreshing.Bossymoo

I wouldn't worry about paying extra for something with loads of programmes, in my experience, most people use very few of them. I also think that £500 is a lot to pay for a wahing machine, especially when you're just starting out.
I've just this second clicked to buy this one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1292563.htm0
