London Tips anyone?

hotel - any deals on at the moment, Friday/Sat night in November coming in around £200 in total for a basic central hotel, is this good?
Travelodge has rooms that accommodate three for less than £40 a night in Ealing and Croydon. They're only 15 minutes from central London by train.Any tips on the best day's/nights to see the sights?
The 38 bus route is good for the sights. Sit on the top deck and you can look over the wall of Buckingham Palace and get a peek of the Queen's back garden.0 -
Best tip - use the Buses, not the Tube.
It's cheaper, usually less crowded and you can see the sights as you go.
You'll need Oyster cards though - the kids go free.
Travelodge have Saver rates on Liverpool St and Tower Bridge for November weekends. These are in central London, as opposed to Ealing/Croydon which are a mainline train journey away.0 -

Make sure that you and your family are up early and about during the rush hour, ideally stand at the top or bottom of escalators and take the time to read your maps, or stop unexpectedly so that you block pavements. Take pushchairs and prams on the Tube or buses whenever possible. A cheery smile and a happy Good Morning will placate most Londoners. Don't worry about having the right money for anything or your tickets to hand, Londoners are happy to wait. Always try to talk in rhyming slang and if you don't know any then just make it up, Londoners love it.
Brilliant! As someone who works, lives and commutes in London you really made me laugh. Although in disagreement with Doshwaster I find that most of us are only too happy to help visitors if asked, we just don't like to initiate.
OP don't be mean. If you can't handle a few harmless jokes that don't even insult you in any way then perhaps public forums aren't for you. You definitely need Oyster cards otherwise you'll pay more for busses and tubes. I don't have children so I can't help you with what they would like and how much travel costs for them. The TFL website has good information on tickets and prices on travel in London. If you do the London Eye then I recommend you buy the ticket that also offers a boat tour on the Thames, or at least get the clipper for a commuter ride on the river. Also I'd avoid HMS Belfast if your youngest is too small to climb up and down ladders on their own, it was very tricky with my 5 year old niece.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
Not sure why I'm bothering as the OP felt directing her to a free attractions sites as well as the transport for London site wasn't helpful .... "ridiculous" in fact and what could be less helpful than asking how to get to a hotel from the station without saying which hotel ,,,,,,however........if time is short check out the Hop on Hop off double decker tour buses as they go to all the places you mention and if it isn't too cold/wet you can use the open top deck. Kids love it. There are several companies but I can't be bothered looking up the specific sites for you so you'll need to google.
As for Londoners been rude-I'm sure you'll fit right in !I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

duchy, I think you're being over sensitive, just because the OPs comment came immediately after yours doesn't mean it's a direct response to it, and in fact you were thanked for your post.
OP, if your kids fancy the London Eye I would also recommend a trip on the Emirates Air Line (although hopefully it won't stop without warning for 20 minutes at the highest point like it did when I used it).0 -
So much to see and do in London!
1. Bung "London" into the thread search......you will find loads of similar threads with ideas. A sticky on London for visitors would be an excellent addition to MSE.
2. To my mind, money spent on an upmarket hotel in London is a waste. Just get the cheapest that you can find that suits as you will not spend much time in the hotel.
3. My own favourites.......The Imperial War Museum and The Princess Diana Playground Kensington Gardens. Both free. Use Lastminute for £15 theatre tickets.
Have a great time......you will"If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Maybe get the Thames Clipper from Embankment to Greenwich - you can see a lot of the sights from the river.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Some of the cheapest especially on the wrong side of Hyde Park are really scummy and not somewhere I'd want to stay with kids though. Check reviews very carefully if doing that.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

They're more than twice the price for the dates I'm looking at.0 -
Travelodge Farringdon is within walking distance or 4 bus stops on the 63 bus. It's clean, comfortable and much quieter than the ones around KX.
8-10th, 15-17th, 22-24th November are all £46 per night.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
