Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Todays action is really the accumulation of a few weeks research. Had to change farrier as last one had what I think must have been a mid life crisis (don't go there :)) and now have his dad. Dad is a fascinating chap who set up a nationwide programme training and teaching hoof care in an African country for a charity. Can't recall where, but, dad really got me thinking about hooves. Most Handsome has been remedially shod for a while now at vast expense. After chatting with farrier last time I read a couple of books and concluded that Most Handsome could maybe do without the remedial shoes too. So today I chatted with farrier and we have agreed to experiment. He was so nice - left with the books I have bought on barefoot performance horses as he wanted to read them. So will be great to get his opinions.
We are going to start next time he is here as Most Handsome going so well at the moment and it is possible he may struggle without shoes initially. I'm off on a confidence building day at the weekend and will want to ride when I get back so we need Most Handsome to be sound.
So remedial shoes put on this time but it is the last time.
That will save around £475 to 600 a year if Most Handsome can cope.

Part of my research into hooves suggested Most Handsome could have sea salt instead of his expensive calming supplement and I switched that about 4 weeks ago and that seems to be working well too.

So that is another £200 a year saved.

  • Mine are all barefoot Watty, even the TBs, which years ago I would have thought impossible. It is tough as the transition isn't easy and it's against the 'norm' but I do feel it is so much better for them.

I love the Easter Independance aim, I will be cheering you on :)

If Most Handsome can be happier *and* you can save money, thats a great thing, it'll definitely help you on your way to Independence Day.

Watty, do you have a linkie to the whole sea salt/calming supplement thing? I'm doing a mini-project on salt, and that sounds important.
