Telematics Box - £100 to Remove

Hi All,
I had it fitted from my insurer Bell last year as it gave me a lower premium than standard quote and was told that it would reduce my premium every year, this year they have sent me a renewal without any discounts and looking at the telematics stats i come back as Excellent every week.. Btw (i am over 30) so other insurers such as esure do not care about telematics and are quoting cheaper. Why should i have to pay £100 to have a device removed from my car ? i don't plan on ever going back to such a scheme again. It seems pointless now..

Anyone else have a similar experience

    Presumably because it costs them money to do so?

    Usually at the end of the policy term the box doesnt need to be removed. If you cancel early there is usually a charge though.

    Are you cancelling the policy or not renewing?

    If cancelling;

    If you decide to cancel your policy before the agreed policy term ends, the unit will be deactivated and you will be subject to a disconnection fee of £100. This fee is in addition to any mid-term cancellation fees detailed in the in the Bell "Guide to your Cover" booklet. If you decide you no longer wish to utilise the Safe Driver unit installed in your vehicle during the policy term, this will be treated as a cancellation request and the disconnection fee will apply.

    If not renewing;

    You will not be charged any fees if you reach the end of your policy term and decide not to renew your Safe Driver policy.

    So you only get charged the 3100 if you cancel the policy before its next renewal date...

    My policy expires on 22/09/13. I have already said this to them as i don't want them to automatically renew the policy when it expires. I just want them to remove the box which they said will charge £100.
    Is this correct, or do i need to speak to someone in Bell with Authority ?

    The mistake that you are making is asking them to remove the box. You don't need to. As soon as your policy expires they can de-activate the box remotely. If you just leave it in your car it won't cost you anything and it will also no longer be collecting or transmitting any data.

    Yep, and I'd be tempted to remove it myself or at least disconnect the power feed

    Take it out yourself AFTER the policy expires.

    Open it up, There maybe just a standard phone SIM card in there. So you have your own GPS tracker.

    At least now I know of someone who has benefited from having the tracker fitted, albeit for just a short while.

    Everyone else I know has been quoted far more to have a policy with the tracker when compared to policies without one. My tracked insurance quotes were more than double the cost of non-tracked policies. :huh:

    At the moment they are generally aimed at young / inexperienced / high risk drivers due to the cost of the devices but by the end of the year there will be a few more options aimed at the wider market..

    young/inexperienced ? i am over 30 with 6 year NCB. I don't drive like a hooligan and average 4000 miles a year. They sold me a policy with the device having the effect of lower premiums each year. They lied
