Not a friend and no I didn't get shirty! They did! Try reading the whole post! Would anyone pay a bill without a statement? No I think not! I will only pay what I owe! I have paid each month exactly what they have asked of me! I have seen a copy of the statement every month since 2012 until the last one on Jan 1st this year. They refused to show me a balance and I can only put that down to the fact they used the card and cannot separate who owes what! I have followed each statement with each payment and as one reply gave me the answer I needed as it worked alongside each statement I received until beginning of the year. I asked a question and really didn't really need the guilt tripping that is so unnecessary. Many thanks for all the helpful non judgemental members!0

Not someone who was happy to take the friend's money when they needed it, and then gets shirty when having to repay it, it seems.
I'm afraid that cases like yours are why people are advised not to lend to friends and family. The sort of people who ask for money like this all too often come over all self-righteous and indignant when it comes time to pay it back.
I agree with the others, by the way, pay them what they are asking. They helped you when you needed it, don't be so mean when it comes to paying back. Don't demand proof, don't be difficult, just pay them back.
I don't think they are being self righteous at all. Would you gladly pay a credit card company x amount without a statement of where they got the figure from? Would you pay a utility company or a shop x amount without a receipt? No you wouldn't so I don't think it's asking too much to have a written log of what they owed. But to the op, for the future, if you borrow again from a (different) friend I would have two notebooks with the amounts written in each and signed by the two of you each time you made a payment and work out what the interest would be at the time. Saves a load of grief later.0
