The price of old motors

We have a very long, slow hill where I live, and it does make me laugh to see people in their new cars desperately trying (and failing) to overtake me on it!
I would have thought most cars these days would out run a 15 year old golf, even if it was a GTI 16v you'd have to be going out of your way to stop a 1.4 TDI Fiesta passing you if it was making a concious effort.0 -

Although it seems any motor you could have bought for 2/300 quid 10 years ago are going for thousands now, i.e xr3i/ golf GTI etc
Most that could have been bought for a few hundred 10 years ago were sheds then that have since made it to that great scrapyard in the sky.
Only the exceptional make big money - you can buy a very presentable XR3i / XR2 for a few thousand and a very nice classic GTI for £5000. Not a big pile of beans really given the financial effort it has taken to keep it that way to this point.0 -
Value, price and cost are often confused, especially with cars and houses. Look up the auction sale price for the old green Jag that's just been sold, just because one of the previous keepers models for stamps.0

My Westfield runs a 1979 registration and a 1979 engine, pushes out 140+ bhp and does 60 in 5.5 seconds. My old neighbour was NOT impressed when I made his brand new 911 Turbo look like it was standing still
People REALLY don't like being overtaken or beaten by an older vehicle.
I once had a guy in a new Ssangyong Musso try to run me off the road after I left him for dead at some traffic lights (I wasn't even trying), first thing I knew was him dangerously overtaking a group of bikers (who'd been behind me) and then pull along side trying to run me into a ditch, he got in front, slammed on the brakes, got out, saw the bikers dismounting behind me and ran off with his tail between his legs.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Oh aye. Totally agree. And i can see how and why that would have happened given the power to weight ratio of a Westfield.
late mk3 / early mk4 golf though, not so much.0 -
bit of an exaggeration there on the 911 turbo "looking like it was standing still". More likely the 911 owner wasn't driving like an idiot. I cant be bothered to check but I'd imagine the 911 turbo has a sub 5 second to 60 time.
Anyway some people can't afford to buy a house and choose to invest in a smart motor instead. I personally get more enjoyment from cars than I do houses but don't feel I should be held back by some house value to car value ratio.
I prefer older motors aswell, there are some impressive motors out there today but for driving experience they are dull with no feeling of excitement when behind the wheel.0 -

Believe what you will, if it makes you happy! I know my car and how it behaves.
On a side note, it's not a 15 year old Mk3/Mk4 - it's a 25 year old Mk2.0 -

Apologies - i read 1998 not 1988.
I would still say you'd have to be going out of your way to stop say, a 1.4 TDCI Fiesta that has committed to an overtaking manuevre, but lets agree to differ.0 -

I think agreeing to differ is probably best! Perhaps it's simply that some people have no idea of how to use their gears to best effect!

Doesn't need to be big/fancy cars though. Look at the price of mk1 XR2's and good quality pug GTI's as adults buy the car they couldn't have as a boy. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0
