They pass a certain point where there are few left and they become valuable classics.....
Trouble is the UK is not the place to own such a car, most people think anything old is worthless and of a lower "status", so you'd have to expect car park damage and also road rage whenever you overtake anyone.

  • TBH I don't really care about status and cars. It amazes me how people put so much emphasis on their car. I would rather spend my money on my home than on a car. You see some nice motors parked outside some rubbish places. It makes me chuckle how vain and stupid that is ( putting a cars value as status.. keeping up with the Joneses). Anyway that's not quite my point. Although older classic they are becoming rarer, I don't think they are that rare and command such a high price. I have been in one (365) and apart from pose appeal they are in no way worth that money. I supposes I am just jealous cos I didn't buy one at the time I could have. Although it seems any motor you could have bought for 2/300 quid 10 years ago are going for thousands now, i.e xr3i/ golf GTI etc.

I hear you on that one, try a 2 bed terraced house with a brand new Bentley and a Porsche 911 Turbo on the front garden (near to where I used to live). I'm sure when they're not at home they make out like they're multi-millionares.

Each to their own, some people don't want a massive house or expensive unpleasant natured trophy women but enjoy their cars, who cares so long as its their own money and not us the taxpayer funding their life choices, you can't take it with you when you exit.
Well unless Pharoah like you're going to be mummified in a pyramid and have your treasure sealed in with you together with those who know about it.

I think some people are shying away from the increasingly complex modern car and prefer something a little more unusual/individual that doesn't need a computer to tell you to when to or a bumper removing to change a bulb, i'm one of them.

To me it's bizarre how image conscious some people can be as far as their cars are concerned. I'm sure people look down on me with my ancient vehicles - I drive a 1988 Golf as my main car, and I love the thing. I put a lot of time and effort into finding the right one and I drive it because, frankly, to own something as lacking in personality as, say, a new Fiesta, would just make me feel suicidal.

You're absolutely right about the road rage thing, btw - no-one seems to like the idea that a 25 year old car is faster than their brand new one. We have a very long, slow hill where I live, and it does make me laugh to see people in their new cars desperately trying (and failing) to overtake me on it!

    Maybe they are?

My uncle most certainly is. Lives in a 3 bed in a housing estate. Smallest house on there. Was a company director all his day for a major insurance firm. S Class Mercs and XJ's as his company car. His wife had a new SL Merc too.

My old boss. 3 bed house with 4 kids so had the dining room converted to a bedroom. Drives a big Lexus jeep. Took the head staggers about 3 months ago, bought a new house on its own grounds and all new furniture for approx £1 million, gave all his old furniture and fittings in the old house away.

And why not. If thats what people want to do. Some people like a nice car. Had a top end alfa v6 and lived in a ex council terraced house in a bad area - so bad that i parked the car 1/2 mile away at night at a friends house and walked home.

At one point between me and my wife we'd £100,000 worth of cars outside a £100,000 house. Nice enough wee house but nothing special.

Have calmed down on the cars now though but if thats what people want to do, what odds? Each to their own.

    Indeed.

A lot of people like a nice car. Heard a (sad) story there recently from my uncle of a friend of his whos wife was dying of cancer. He bought a Rolls Royce (not for a fortune) so he could drive her around in a Rolls for her final few months. She loved the gesture. Apparently they had some great times together in it. She passed away and hes selling the car now.

Better to die with memories than with dreams

Why is it 'bizarre' just because it isnt what you do / would do?

Each to their own. If people want a big car or a big house, what odds? Some people have one or the other, some people both. Some people have neither

You still leaving with nothing though, so what odds?

Yes, a lot of classic stuff is getting to be overvalued.

Apparently investors are moving in and buying the rare stuff up, which is forcing up prices.

A shame really in many ways.
