FTFY
The MK2 VW Golf is the one that earned the reputation, the later ones don't deserve it and you would buy a Golf from the 1980's because by now it'd be falling apart.
Same goes with the Micra, I can't count how many of those old things i've known with blown headgaskets (for example).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

He should choose his own car...
If I had no children, and no wife... then it would be this...today...
£20k should see you right..
Instead, I have to pay the £20k off the mortgage...

Anyhows, back in the real world. I can no longer go into the car dealership and buy a car on impulse. The last one for me was a newish Racing Blue Clio 182 with Both Cup Packs..

How about a Merc SLK...but not in grey..0 -
how can he be that old and not be able to pick a car that he likes the look of himself!?
focus/jazz if you want reliable/dull
mazda 3/civic type r if he wants something a bit nippy (but might need a bigger budget for something half decent)
tdi golf/fabia if he is doing big miles
basically, the details you have posted op make it very difficult to suggest a suitable carThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Never understood why anyone would want a 2 seater smart car. Yes they might be OK to get yourself to work locally and back again but not very practical with shopping or tip runs.0

Depends on his budget, taste and needs, more than how old he is. I'm 31 and drive a 30 year old polo, my mate's 31 and drives a brand new Mondeo. Horses for courses really.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Yeah, I was thinking something like this:This thread is a request from a 32 year old's mummy to find him a car. In the circumstances I thought it was appropriate.
No?
When he's a bit older, maybe he will learn to use the internet himself too. But's let's not rush things."Einstein never said most of the things attributed to him" - Mark Twain0 -

181,000 miles - that has got to have been a driving school car in it's early life!0 -
How about a classic car?
You could get a nice MGB GT for £2-3,000? 2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
asking for minimum 5 cars and also pictures seems a bit much for me. No-one is getting paid for doing this for you.
If you want pictures for any of the ones suggested, you can always do your own google image search. :P
As others have said, it's hard to suggest without knowing the person, so here's some suggestions from a woman in her 30s who tends to like "fun" Japanese cars more usually associated with men.
Subaru Impreza WRX (The newer ones are hatchbacks)
Toyota GT-86
Honda Civic Type-R0
