Bear in mind a 2006/2007 Octavia VRS TDI will have the older PD diesel engine and the original DPF which was problematic as the engine was never designed for a DPF. The CR (Common Rail) version of the engine which was also a two litre producing 170bhp was introduced around 2008 and was designed with the DPF in mind to make it easier to get hot and regenerate.

It is possible to remove the DPF for a few hundred quid although I don't know if there's still any question about it possibly failing the new MOT. The PD170 engines also had an issue with injectors which was dealt with under a free recall but quite a few people have had problems after getting the injectors replaced.

I have a 56 plate Octavia VRS TDI mainly because it was one of the few more sporty style estates on the go at the time and it's a very practical car. I haven't had any big issues with mine (aside from the DPF sensor failing) although I'm careful to avoid short journeys.

I agree with the comment on the Merc. My dad has an 03 C Class and has had it 8 years this year and covered nearly 160,000 miles in it. Servicing and parts are a little expensive, yes, but the BMW and Audi parts are going to be just as high maybe even more in the case of Audi - but it passes the services and MOTs fine every time, no problem. Did fail an emissions test a few years ago, it was just due to the fact the garage didn't warm the engine up enough on a cold winter's morning.

If you dont fancy the Merc or it's out of budget, the Octavia would be my next choice. Not sure on the reliabilty though, should be like any VAG car.

Is an 03 plate not an inferior Chrysler Merc? My mates rusted from inside to out at the wheel arches.
