Ok here's the short-list (£5-6k budget):

Alfa 159 2.4 jtdm 56-57 plate
Skoda octavia vrs 2.0 tdi 56-57 plate
BMW 330d 52-53 plate
Audi a6 or a4 2.7 tdi (may be bit of a stretch)

Which would you choose? Would welcome any other suggestions along those lines if you think of better ones!

Cheers

  • Octavia just from those options...personally I'd get a newer car with a 1.6 or 2.0 engine rather than getting a 10 year old (in the BMWs case) car
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

    Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000
  • MB C class, preferably around 07 reg, last of the W203 range.

W204 C class 07 on is a better car, but might well be out of your budget.

Do not be tempted to a manual MB, foot operated hand released parking brake is not manual friendly but mainly because MB's auto boxes are the best by a country mile, and you'll never sell a manual MB on.

Once you've gone MB you might never go back.

Anything with the PUG/JLR V6 diesel. I've had 2 cars with it fitted Pug 407c 2.7d and Jag XF 3.0d.

It's a Pug design , tweaked by Jaguar and built by Ford.

Fitted in Pug 407, Citroen C5/C6, Land Rover disco, Range Rover and Jag S Type/ XF/ XJ

An absolute joy to drive unlike my mate's Vauxhall Signum V6 3.0d with a fiat engine!

Second choice the 2.2d fitted in Pug 407, Cit C5, Ford S-max, Mondeo, Jag X type.

When i saw the title i was thinking Have Rolls and Bentley got diesel engines?

Maybe its me but i dont see a 10/11 year old BMW diesel as a high end car. Its an expensive bill waiting to happen.

No votes for alfa? It was secretely my favourite but really worried about reliability having lived with 10+ years of vag.

Have not looked at MB or pug v6 at all. Interesting choices, thanks.

Sorry, i meant high-end performance for diesel, keeping in mind this is MSE.
  • I'd say none of them are High End cars... But is £6k the Maximum budget?

With regards to the Merc suggestion and "You'll never go back" . Is that based on experience and with what motor and box?

    Complicated Italian car.
2 Expensive, over engineered German luxury brand cars.
    A fast Skoda aka VW.

Personally, I wouldn't have any, especially if reliability is remotely important.

Expensive to fix when out of warranty.

Accord 2.2 or a petrol DISI Mazda 6.

Can't justify more than £6k on a car really. However i'd like it to be fun and do all my own work so not worried about garage bills, just how often i'll be working on it!

Each to their own, but i'd say 0-60 in 7.3 sec for a diesel is pretty good going! Of course, petrols are different league.

See, i really like the accord but on paper its completely gutless. Have i just not found the right one?
