    why is wireless essential

a usb laser is the obvious choice.

I just find it convenient as we all smartphones, if that help. And the price difference between the USB and wireless printer appears marginal.

The printer does not need to be wireless in order to print to it from a phone.

If you have a wireless router or access point in your house, which you almost certainly will if you have broadband internet, then you can just connect the printer to this with a network cable (assuming it's a printer that can be networked) and you'll be able to print to it from your phones as the router will automatically handle moving the print jobs from wireless to wired.

you'll almost certainly need an upgrade on the router as the ISP router will be very no frills.

If it has LAN ports and wireless, then a networked printer will work just fine, even on a basic router.

The wireless is just a bridge onto the wired network. The phones won't even know that the printer is wired, and the printer won't even know that the phones aren't wired.
