I had similar experiences in my last car, which was a Renault Megane with a rather weedy 1.4 L petrol engine (especially when there was a hill involved!). I'm all in favour of economical cars but this sort of 'performance' does get frustrating.michaelvintner wrote: »I had the 1.4 engine in a Skoda Octavia. Overtaking anything was a painful experience. I once went to overtake another car, a Volvo (Who was driving perfectly fine) flashed me out (I actually wished he hadn't as my speed had dropped to about 50). The poor Volvo driver then had to sit behind me patiently as I struggled to get the revs back up and get some speed out of the thing. Those seconds felt like days as I could see the Volvo driver behind me having to pull back to a safe distance while my car literally just stayed still even with my foot welded to the accelerator.0 -

My wife's got a 1.4 Golf, but I think it is 120 or 140 BHP, a bit weedy compared to my Octavia vRS at 200 BHP but her car is nice enough to drive.
Skodas seem to come with more toys as standard but the finish is marginally better in VWs (my in-laws have a Passat and a Beetle and have always had VWs so seen a few over the years).
Between my wife and I we have had 3 Skodas and they are nice cars, I was a a bit surprised when she decided that she wanted a Golf but her choice."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

You dodged a bullet on the DSG. In warranty, great. Out of warranty, not so much...0 -

I think it all comes down to the technology in the engine. My mum has a bog standard 1.2 in her Seat Ibiza. It is painful to drive. My nan on the other hand has the 1.2 TSI in her Seat Ibiza and they are completely different engines. The TSI is responsive and pleasant to drive the one in my mums requires thrashing just to reach the speed limit.Iva started Dec 2018.0 -
Yes, you want to look at the power and torque of the engine, not it's volume. In this case we're talking about an 80 bhp engine I believe.michaelvintner wrote: »I think it all comes down to the technology in the engine. My mum has a bog standard 1.2 in her Seat Ibiza. In this case you are looking at an asthmatic aspirated engine, in TSI form with Turbo the same engine becomes an animal. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0
