Toyota Service Plan - Any advantages?

£720 that covers 3 services. One every 10K miles or 1 year (whichever comes first).

At first (like my previous service plan) I thought this was good as you paid in small Direct Debit chunks and had no fee to pay when a service was due however, upon further inspection, it seems like I am paying way over the odds if I compare the plan to to paying 3 individual 1 off payments.

From Toyotas website:

3 x FULL Plus services total £710

I am pretty certain that I don't think I get 3 Full+ services in the plan I signed up to. I think i get 1 x intermediate, 1 x full and 1 x full+. The total cost of these if I paid individually is £550.00

Is there any advantage of having a service plan as opposed to paying individually? It seems to cost more.

I am using RRG

So, if you do 30,000 miles in two years, is that your 3 services used up? You're right that it isn't a full service every 10,000 miles either.
Sounds like a waste of money to me, especially if it's a fairly new car.
Find a local independent (preferably recommended by someone you can trust) who can do it for much less. Toyotas are so reliable, you're unlikely to have any unexpected failures outside of normal wear and tear in the 3 years and the service plan may not cover that anyway.

  • Last time i had Toyota main dealer servicing was in 2010.

Hilux full service was around £300 and £150 for a minor, minor at 12 months major at 24 months minor at 36 months, so i would have paid around £600 if i hadn't supplied my own superior oils (so services £70 less).

The deal sounds way overpriced to me and yet another con designed to boost the salespersons meagre basic into a liveable wage at the unthnking customers expense.

And don't fall for the Super Quadraspaz paint protection either, costs the dealership about £20 and really if your buying a new car, you should get off your lazy a55 and clean it.

    Am I wrong?

I`ve just took out a 5yr service plan on my Hilux, its worth it to me for not to having to worry about finding the cash when the services are due.:)

I got it for free last year :D (and other extras too like metallic paint, gap insurance, sat nav etc) I do clean and wax the car anyway, always have done so, no reason to change that ;)

However I didn't go for the service plan, can't really see the point. Not 100% sure - anyone wanting the service plan would need to check - but I think it might tie to that specific dealership for it.

I very much doubt you got it for free, rather you paid over the odds to start with and they wanted to sweeten the deal ;)

They do anything to make people think they're getting a "good deal", but it's all trickery. They never make a loss and the salesman always makes his commission.

Let's put it that way - I didn't do too badly - just out model so not much room for straight money off there, paid 4% below list price for the car, and got about 10% "worth" of extras for £0. I usually keep cars until they're 10 years old :) and sold the old one privately because I couldn't see them giving much for it part ex :rotfl:

And of course they made their money from it, I wouldn't expect them not to, otherwise they wouldn't be in business for long

  • You've done the sums yourself anyway and found that the £720 they want for 1 x intermediate and 2 x full services is far in excess of the same services using the Toyota fixed prices.
Do they say whether the plan includes brake fluid change and pollen filter change? They'd want a further £70 for those in addition.
I was offered a service plan (2 x intermediate and 1 x full) when I bought my Yaris but the fixed price services worked out much less.
Do you really need the Full+ service? That's only advised for heavy use, e.g. taxis etc.. It doesn't really include much more than the Full service either.
The only possible advantage is paying monthly to avoid the full cost at one go when the time comes.

They've changed the terminology from Minor and Major to:

    Intermediate (presume minor) - £119.00
    Full (?????) - £179.00
Full Plus (Presume major) - £239.00

    Prices are here:

    toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyota/bv/frame_start.jsp?id=Owners-Service-Servicing

So my last service plan was 3 years meaning I had to service at:

    50k
    60k
    70k

Ive just completed the 70K this morning and its clear from the paperwork this is an intermediate (£119).

Now if I assume the previous two were full pluses then the total would equate - £597.00

I'm pretty sure I paid more for the 3 years.

When calling Toyota RRG, they confirmed that the service plan is better because you pay for the services and pay the prices valid at the time of the quote in small chunks interest free over x years with a 10% discount applied at the outset. If the prices increase over the service plan period, they wont affect me as the prices I pay at the time are fixed.

The alternative (I presume) would be to pay in 3 individual chunks.

The question is - is the service i pay for individually (intermediate, full or full plus) the EXACT same as what I would i get under the service plan (intermediate, full or full plus).

If they are both identical, then id rather just set up a standing order to an account of mine that I send £30 to each month and forget about . Then just pay the full chunks because to me they work out cheaper.

I do know that Toyota dont charge me any extra for the oil, fluids, bulbs, plugs etc. The second question is that if I pay individually, will all these be included in the £119, £179 and £239 price or do I pay extra for them.

I am not sure what my new £720 quote gets me that I wouldnt normally get with paying in single prices. Not bothered about the half price MOT.

If I work on the same basis - 1 x intermediate and 2 fulls. The total cost individually is £477.00

So am I to assume the extra £243 is for oil, fluids etc?

If so, it seems rather hefty.
