Calor Gas Fire

I'm buying a house (exchanged and completing soon) which has a calor gas fire in the lounge. I wondered if anyone knew how the running cost of it would compare to a wood burning stove?

Is it the main heating source or is it just there to look pretty. If it's just to top up from radiators then it probably won't cost a lot however where does it get it's gas from, small cylinders, big, cylinders or a LPG tank, the cost per kw from each varies greatly.
Is it thermostatically controlled or do you just turn it on and have a manual control - all of these will influence how much it cost to run.
You would also have to factor in the cost of installing a wood burner which might be quite high if you've got to install a chimney liner as well.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
The Calor gas is from tall red cylinders.
I think the fire is turn on and control manually.
The house has oil central heating.0 -
According to http://www.nottenergy.com/energy_cost_comparison/, bottled gas is a lot more expensive than firewood. However, you'd have to factor in the cost of buying and installing a wood burner, and neither is cheap. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Yeah, total cost looks to be north of £2,500. I have to be honest though; I like the sound of woodburner in general.0

You can't beat a wood burner on a chilly winter's night. However, you may find yourself spending the whole evening curled up in front of the stove, rather than doing anything useful! If it sticks, force it.

That's the plan/fear.
Woodburner, oak floor, leather suite including two armchair recliners, single malt scotch and view over countryside.
I do want one, but wanted to know I wasn't going to have something uneconomical to run compared to what was there..0
