Ask Murphy - it's his law... (Or his brother Sod, but he's a bit naughty and doesn't like to be used) :)

They are designed that way ?

You are almost certainly to be in at 4am, than in at 4pm, to get the low battery warning !!!

The smoke alarm doesn't know the time!

It knows more than you think, the photocopier seems to know when you need copies in a hurry and jams, it rarely jams when you have plenty time.

    I used to wonder this.
I also wondered how come the battery in a mains alarm ran out so often, too.
Then I discovered that money spiders like to use the alarm as their own little Camp Bastion.
It's worth taking the thing apart (as much as is possible) & giving it a good vacuum just in case. I must have saved a few bob on batteries since my discovery :D

Because they are all made in China and between there and here there is an 8 hour time difference

It just knows the temperature. Battery voltage can drop with temperature and the combination of a lowish battery plus a further drop in voltage through the night as temperatures dip will make the low volts alarm much more likely to go off at 4am
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Are you saying that if you have a house fire at 4 AM then you won't get a low battery warning?:rotfl:

Thanks. Now that I've had a lie in I've enjoyed your answers. 3 times we were up. Each time replaced the wrong batteries. Turns out it was the combined carbon monoxide one under the stairs. Finally got to sleep to be wakened by engineering works on the railway. Oh joy! Will make Sept 1st the new annual replacement of battery day.

So if I light a small fire under it each evening, it'll be happy and I can sleep in peace :D
