OK, sorry, I should have said "Most fully comp insurance policies for private individuals include windscreen cover without it affecting your no claims bonus, but you will have an excess of £50-75 to pay"

Doesn't sound sensible to me.
Sounds to me like you've chose the wrong insurance company. Any chance it was one of those iffy companies with £3000 excesses that appear at the top of compare websites?
I once had to claim twice in one year for windscreens and my policy didn't go up, I quoted it with and without and it didn't make a difference.0
