Incapacity age addition

Just had pension statement which refers to'Incapacity age addition' which i've never heard of before and can't find a proper explanation of it. I had the same debilitating illness intermittently for several years before I couldn't go on and was retired on medical grounds age 46, and - except for a few times when i tried to work but found out I couldn't - I have been getting incapacity benefit. Should I have been getting this incapacity age addition because my illness started in my 30s?

  • Incapacity Age Addition

The person may be entitled to an age addition if they are receiving long-term Incapacity Benefit and were under age 45 on the first day of incapacity for work. This includes days of Statutory Sick Pay.

Incapacity Age Addition is paid on one of two scales, depending on the people age on the first day of incapacity:

Rates of Incapacity Benefit Age Addition

£6 lower rate - if the client was aged between 35 and 44,

£10.70 higher rate - if the client was aged under 35

    that's why I've asked the question - did/do I fit these criteria?

Invalidity Addition/ Incapacity Age Addition - paid if you were entitled to Invalidity Allowance / Incapacity Benefit shortly before your State Pension age.
But any additional State Pension or COD have to be taken away.

This is the part of the statement that prompted me to post the question. I get IB and I'm due to retire next month but I've never had Incapacity Age Addition. The 2nd sentence doesn't make any sense to me????

If you have received your statement, you will see the above followed by

"So your invalidity addition will be......£xxxx"

Are you being awarded any? If not, either you did not fit the criteria as in 2 for any award or, if you were eligible for an award, it has been cancelled out by the subtraction of any ASP/COD you may have? See page 32 and 33 of http://www.ageuk.org.uk/Documents/EN-GB/Factsheets/FS19_State_Pension_fcs.pdf?dtrk=true

No I'm not being awarded any but the existence of it has alerted me as to whether I should have been getting it for the past 18+years as outlined in my original post. I'm afraid I don't understand the offset you refer to and mentioned in the ageuk document, the wording in the pension statement doesn't make sense to me, can you illustrate it? Sorry but I find it so frustrating trying to understand all this, the language used is not very accessible to the avge person.

    2 Invalidity addition
You may receive an invalidity addition on your Category A or B State Pension
if you were receiving any of the following payments before reaching State
    Pension age:

 an invalidity allowance with Invalidity Benefit
 transitional invalidity allowance with Incapacity Benefit
 an age addition with long-term Incapacity Benefit.
The invalidity addition is paid at the same rate as your invalidity allowance or
age addition but is offset against your Additional State Pension or contracted out deduction.

You were receiving one of the above?

I think it means that any invalidity addition to the State Pension would be reduced (possibly to nil) by any ASP/COD the pensioner might have?

However the Pensions Service would be able to advise further concerning your personal circumstances.

    As here: http://www.welfarerights.net/benefits-guides/Retirement-Pension
    Invalidity Addition

"Paid if you had an Invalidity Allowance shortly before you reached state pension age. If you become entitled to your pension on or after 16 September 1985, the total of any Additional Pension and contracted-out deductions will be taken away from your Invalidity Addition. Anything left over will be paid to you as an Invalidity Addition."
  • How much IB do you receive? Many people receive the age addition but do not realise it.
