Just switched over to BT broadband, scared now after reading reviews!!

Is it really as bad as all the reviews say?! I've switched to them from Talk Talk, used to pay £13.31 unlimited but now i'll be paying £16/month with 6 months free (already paying £15 for the bt line) and we'll get BT Sport. After reading all the reviews on the internet i'm now worried that i've made a mistake, what's your experiances with BT broadband??

Its ok. Most people use them (about a quarter of the market) and they are perfectly adequate.

They probably get the most complaints because they are the biggest and because they are the default choice for anyone who doesn't know what they are doing, ie those who will have trouble. They then spend little money helping people and are a large monolithic utterly intransigent firm which can be infuriating when they chose to do something thats awkward for you. For instance they have no proper outgoing email server as they block all emails not sent from a bt address. (But most people use webmail so don't notice).

However if you know just enough to make your computer and wifi work yourself there is no reason it won't tick along perfectly well for the basic internet service. As good as talk talk anyway.

Unless you are still in the cooling -off period, there's little point in asking this question now.
The service is fine when it works. When it doesn't (or you have a billing issue) you find out why the CS is so poorly rated.
But if you've been used to dealing with TT then that shouldn't be a problem for you.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

They are ludicrously more expensive than most rivals and, to be fair, not the worth the extra imo. But it seems like the 'free' BT Sports (that's akin to DFS's interest free credit offer btw!) is doing its job of 'masking' the ridiculous prices.

PS If you'd also transferred your phone line to talktalk the unlimited BB would have been half the price you were paying.

PPS And imposing 18 month contracts these days is really taking the ****.
  • If you do the figures you will find it can be a far better deal than you had with talk talk. I pay £16 pm for unlimited bb plus I pay £11.75 line rental ( pay 1 year in advance: £141= £11.75) which equates to £27.75 pm plus 6 months free,(I have just moved house hence new contract with no £130 line connection fee) plus free bt sport. I have been with BT for over 3 years with speeds of 17.4mb, no outages, no tethering no trouble. If you read various forums there seems to be more complaints about Sky, Virgin and Talk Talk than there is about BT. Stop worrying. Go enjoy and ignore the moaners.
P.S. I'm retired so I am not a BT employee just a happy customer!

I'm by no means a fan of TT but this is a bit of a silly claim. £27.75/mth (dependent on you paying 12 months in advance on line rental) on an 18 month contract and with just weekend calls included is a good deal? I think you need to use a better calculator :D The OP is only paying £13.31/mth for his BB with talktalk because he doesn't also have line rental with the company. If he also had line rental the BB would be £7.50/mth to add to the £9.50/mth line rental saver charge so £17.00 with 12 month min term and evenings and weekend calls included. I think your problem is you aren't comparing like with like here....

PS BT Broadband actually gets a far worse average score than Talktalk on reviewcentre. Not something any company wants to hear TBH.:D

Perhaps I should have said that I did not deduct the six months free bb (£96) from the £27.75pm which brings the yearly total, £297, down to £201 (£16.75pm for the first year) I expect that you will still dispute these figures, but hey ho, that's what some people do!
As for reviews, well no two seem to agree, so take them with a pinch of salt!! It's mostly moaners who post reviews, people who are happy with their deals seldom post reviews.

Oh dear. Like I said before, get yourself a calculator that actually works and come back with the real figures. Shakes head.

Translation: 'B*gger, I've really shown myself up with those totally incorrect figures but what can I comeback with now? I know, I'll dip out of the thread but pretend I don't have my tail between my legs'. :p
  • Now, now play nicely. People have different opinions and calculators. I'm sure we can all get there eventually. What seems like a good deal to some won't to others.

As for the should I be worried about BT issue? Well have a think about why you made that choice? More often than not it will be right choice. Unless you try it and test it out then how are you going to know for yourself? PlusNet do a monthly contract for the more risk adverse. You pay your disconnection fees upfront (£50 i think?) and its £14.99 unlimited.

I've had BT landline for years and never once had an incorrect bill and any queries promptly resolved. My last broadband provider were amazing when I first joined years ago but now are so pants I have to leave. All things change over time. What's great today might be not so great in 2 years time.

If you feel confident with your decision you've done the right thing then stick with your guns. Be damned and proud! If you don't feel so confident or concerned then maybe a re-think and another decision is called for. You are within their cooling off period so you still have time.
