Help!! Dodgy texts wiping out credit!!

My partner has been getting texts on her phone inviting her to enter competitions but every time she receives one it's taking about £1.50 of her credit!! She's now run out of credit but she keeps getting a text saying "call time low,top up now" which is obviously NOT from o2 - probably the scammers trying to get her to top-up so they can rinse more of her credit!!
Can anyone advise how she can stop this happening or will she need to get a new sim? We're hoping she won't need to as she's got a really good and easily memorised number!!

I had a major problem with similar stuff when I changed to Vodafone - it was a recycled number and someone else had signed up to numerous services.
I was on contract however, so I phoned them up and they cancelled the charges and gave me the numbers to call in order to cancel the services. I am not sure how that would work on payg - I would say try phoning up the mobile phone company to see if they can tell you who the texts are coming from and what number to phone to cancel.
I was also told to register with the telephone preference service as you can now register your mobile against getting unwanted texts.
Good luck, I have every sympathy and hope you/your partner can get this sorted out fast.0 -
I had a similar problem last week, and kept recieving text messages for some ringtone club that were taking £3 credit off me at a time. (I do not recall sending off for any ringtones). When I went into O2, they said they would need to see the texts I'd recieved so they could do something about it. However me being stupid, I got rid of them. In the end I ended up buying a new sim card for £4.99 otherwise, would have had to wait for them to scam my phone again for more credit.
If you do decide to go into O2 to sort this out, my advice is to keep any text messages you have received. Good LuckA woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.:D0 -
I really don't know if this will help in your situation, but it might be worth a go as it works for people who keep getting charged for ringtones and having their payg credit used up:
To stop any unwanted messages users should simply text 'STOP' to the sender
This was the advice given out recently on a Watchdog programme - here is the link for anybody who wants to read about it.
Anyway hope you solve your problem quickly

You can also visit the ICSTIS (Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telepone Information Services). Entering the number that shows up as the sender may reveal which company are running it, otherwise you can report it to the ICSTIS for investigation.0
