My chilli recipe says 500g extra lean mince and I aim to get at least 5-6portions out of it.

NHS Guidelines for red meat consumption is 80 grams a day maximum for an adult.
If someone is regularly eating nearly 200 grams of red meat a day they will be at much higher risk of many health problems such as bowel cancer and heart problems.

    Hello there :D

It largely depends as stated how much meat you need/want.

I recently made chilli with one pack of mince (although I usually use Quorn). I got 6 DECENT (we're starvos) sized dinners out of it and one generous lunch. I added lots of grated courgette and carrots, lentils, onion,s peppers, celery etc. I added the chilli beans separately as the person I was cooking for doesn't like them. I usually keep my veg chunky but again I was cooking for a fussy pants so it's really up to you. Grating it makes it less "noticeable" as such - if your recipe is good enough, it shouldn't matter how much meat is on your plate ;) the recipe I use is on this pdf and is the first one - Barrys chilli. I keep bottled lime juice in and frozen coriander so I can make it any time. It's great with lime rice and tortilla chips (value!)

I usually use a bag of quorn and get at least 6 very generous dinners plus a couple of lunches for myself.

I prefer to have a large vegetable content in my meals for health reasons, taste and I think it makes the meat go further.

    I wouldn't use oats personally:eek: :o

    A few threads

    Portion sizes - mince

    Bulking out meals

Any devious ideas for hiding veggies

Ill merge this with the first thread later

it doesn't really matter how much meat alias - loads of lentils and beans will make the chilli more satisfying and give lots of protein. I understand about the portion size ...........my family were miners and OH used to be one too - then worked manual labour and in the last few years his 'work' has become more van (his mobile office)).based and he doesn't dig roads up anymore!
therefore I have drastically cut down his portion size and the amount of meat he eats (he has noticed but approves as he understands why).
for a manual labourer I would actually add another 500 - 1000 cals per day to the recommendation for an 'average' person.

my dad could eat an amazing amount and never put on an ounce til he retired (mum couldn't get her head round the fact he didn't 'need' stoking up!) but dad just left more and more on his plate - in the end she admitted defeat and just gave him the same size portion as everyone else.

I used to use 400g between 2 of us  - now I portion up our bulk buy mince from Costco into 250/300g portions & add quite a bit of onion, lentils & mushrooms as well as kidney beans & sometimes courgette too. This will serve 2 of us for dinner plus give dd 2 portions or another meal for the freezer.

    Re meat - Delia says
I find that 6-8 oz (175-225 g) of meat per person is needed if someone has a large appetite, like my husband. For a normal appetite 6 oz (175 g) per person is usually adequate
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
