Portion size query.....

Options
Assuming the recipient of the meals is a working male (long days and manual work) and this is his only main hot cooked meal...how many portions of chilli would you expect to get out of 750g of minced beef?

Can you base your thoughts on what a decent sized meal would be for this type of person rather than any desire to eke things out, or what a little old lady would eat, please? Obviously it would be eaten with rice but I just really would like to know about the meat portion size.

I suspect I need to work on my portion size but I'll let you laugh at me after I get some answers. :D

100g of raw boneless meat per person is the average serving, but id guess you probably got about 4 servings

Hubby probably has about a 125g portion of mince. We buy a 250g portion between me, him and our 16 month old. But he would eat much more if given lol

Yeah I'd guess at about 4/5, maybe 6. If it's chilli though I'm assuming you would be adding veg and beans to it so the portions should be pretty generous.

  • Depends on how much veg and kidney beans you add to it. I'd expect to get at least six adult portions out of 750 grammes of meat

4 .. My OH eats like 10 bears though! and I'd add loads of veg because he wouldn't eat it otherwise.

Add loads of veg, different beans, would also bulk out with lentils, red ones for hiding and tinned green ones to see :-)

I do 750g mince at a time and get about 5 meals (2 portions per meal) out of it. I'd say they were fairly generous portions too. I tend to bulk out chili and bolognese with lentils, oats, grated carrot, etc. too though.

    Thanks all.

'Nother quick q please.......I know you can add lentils to a pot of mince to stretch it out.....how do I know how much to add and what do I do with them? Do I need to soak them first? :o

I think I might have asked this before, I have a sense of deja vu. I suspect I never got round to actually adding them though and if I did ask, I've completely forgotten what you said. :D

I used to use 500g for 2 adults for chili and bolognese and now I use less than that for a family of 5.

Meat is not essential in the human diet so I guess it depends on how much meat you want to eat :)
