I use red lentils and just chuck in a handful. I would start with a small amount and then work your way up :)

I do 750g mince at a time and get about 5 meals (2 portions per meal) out of it. I'd say they were fairly generous portions too. I tend to bulk out chili and bolognese with lentils, oats, grated carrot, etc. too though.

    That's 10 portions!

I am sooo not doing this right. No flipping wonder my food bills are so big. :rotfl:

Oats? What would I do with them? Just chuck them in dry? How much to use?

I have one 750g pack left, I will save that one for tomorrow and go buy things to add to it and see if I get more portions that still look a lot iyswim.

Just chuck in a handful of oats Ali & they will absorb the liquid.
Grated carrot bulks portions out too.

I do 80-100 grams of raw meat per person...think of a McDonalds burger....they are accused of being really unhealthy due to the high fat content in the meat...well the salad and bread doesn't have much fat so it must be the meat...anyway the 2 all beef patties at McDonalds are 1.6oz each (45 grams). You really don't need much meat at all. Even a quarter pounder is 4oz (113 grams). I could never imagine eating 200 grams of meat per person in a meal...and I''m a 6ft tall male.

Red split lentils just go in as they are - they will soften up and almost dissolve. Oats just go in as they are too, not too many though or it can end up a bit porridge-y! I just about a handful or so in.

I probably wouldn't do lentils, oats and carrot all in one go, but usually two out of the three. I add a whole tin of kidney beans despite OH claiming not to like them - I slow-cook it so they get really soft so he doesn't mind them so much in the end.

I use a fair bit of passata so it's quite saucey, though OH prefers his portion strained a bit. Doing a mix of passata and chopped tomatoes is the best combo I think though - the tomato pieces bulk out the 'solid' stuff and the extra liquid/sauce from the passata helps it look like there's more.

But if I did....what's left could probably be sliced and taken in his piece bag the next day . :rotfl:

Just kidding! In case anyone wonders. :D

    Thanks. :)

I get 8 portions out of 500 grams of mince when doing chilli the same with shepherds pie 2 decent size pies each serving 4 of us, my standard chilli recipie has 500g of mince, 2-3 onions and 2-3 sticks of celery and then has 4 tins kidney beans, tinned tomatoes, and usually a tin of baked beans added in too and then all the spices.

Hubby and older son eat larger portions than myself and youngest

I would have thought you could get around 8 portions with the addition of veg and lentils ,don't forget you are eating it with rice which is a filler-upper as well.
(by the way I am a little old lady :):) and I like a decent plateful of food):):):)
