OP, I don't think you answered a previous question but when you stated it "boots up to the home screen" do you mean it boots up OK to the desktop but you're unable to do anything from then on via the keyboard or touchpad? Is it a Windows 7 or Windows 8 machine? What make and model of the laptop?

It's an Asus A53u,windows 7. It boots up to the desktop but even from there every key press has a massive delay sometimes up to a minute. The computer guy said its on and off whether it sees the hard drive on boot up, not the HDD as they tested it with another drive.

Not quite the same as "The fault is that it boots up to the home screen but then just won't do anything."

You can still do something but it's very slow, sounds to me that it's software related, possibly even a virus. I would try a reformat and reinstall of Windows.

What anti virus are you running?
Are all the windows updates applied?
What other software is running at boot up?
How much free disk space have you?

Your description appears to be "it's running slowly", not "it's not running at all".
So, the "fault" is most likely in software and configuration. Either wipe it and do a re-install using the backup disks you created when you bought the computer, or you need to find a geek who will spend about 10-15 hours going through it to remove and reset all the junk that is slowing it down.

Sorry, I would have replied earlier, but I spent 3 hours this afternoon starting to speed up a computer for a neighbour who wanted my advice on buying a new one because the old one was so slow.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

full destructive recovery. not just a over the top re-install. Most laptops/desktops have this option. Then If that fails to work then start looking at hardware issues not beforehand. Tbh the skill level in quite a few PC-worlds are quite low. (Saw one the other day reading a guide on how to install mem). Not saying all PC world tech staff are like this.

If it was in front of me for repair this is what I would of done..
    1) rebooted it into safe mode and checked to see if error happens. If error does not happen loaded command promt and typed msconfig. In msconfig told the system not to load all the start up programs and rebooted back to windows normal. If this resolved the issue Boom find out what app was causing it and leave it unselected in msconfig.

    2) spyware/Virus scans ofc but this does not catch everything for example there are a quite a few viruses out there that do not get picked up esp when it comes to bitcoin mining etc that eats up 100% of cpu/gpu. So also check task manager see if anything looks out of the norm if not go to 3

    3) full destructive recovery. standard hardware tests. i/o disk tests and memtests.

But hey what do I know :)
  • A lot more than me ;-)
Surely the computer shop would have picked up such stuff?
They checked for viruses etc and now the laptop is failing to even see the hard drive and not booting up?
Wish this was a car I could fix it myself.
1st port of call is back to the shop to see if they can do a report and/or fix it?
    Thanks for the replies

TBH I work with computers and for the most part would not trust pc world. Fixed a few pc's after they had been there. Heh so after they "tested it" and tried another hd it stopped working "grin".
It could of been a failing hd but that would not explain the general just running slow.

also has the hd failed or has someone at pc world just not screwed up the boot drive and think its not working. Or have they checked and made sure its not showing in the bios.

But yea I would find out whats going on ask for details on what could of caused it and let us know... so we can tell you if hes full of **** or not :)

I didnt take it to PC world to be looked it was a small independent computer shop. And I think they tried another hard drive and a clean install of windows and it was hit n miss whether it was seeing the hd so ill take it back n see if they can look more in depth depending on cost, it might just be a sell for spares or repair as there's no point spending too much if PC world won't repair/replace or refund.

As suggested previously, 1st port of call (after backing up any data) should be read the manual and factory restore it, 15 minutes later, it will either work perfectly, or not work and it will cost you nothing to find out.

if it still doesn't work, then look at hardware.

if it really isn't seeing the hd, then obvious starting point is to check connections, but take anything a shop says with a pinch of salt.
