PC fault- what's my rights?

Hi, thanks for the quick replies. The computer shop were quite good, the computer shop didn't want to delve any deeper because I said I would be taking it to PC world and not to disturb anything really.
The fault is that it boots up to the home screen but then just won't do anything.
Anyway, I've just been to PC World and spoke to the 1st salesperson who said I needed to go to the manufacturer. When informed it was PCW who I need to see he called his manager.
After a conversation with him I was given a customer services number to ring as it was over 6months old they would not sort it through the store. I was told I need an independent check of it to determine the fault etc. they would be willing to repair but that would incur a £50 plus parts charge.
The reasonable period of time argument just got dismissed.
Where do I go now?
Thanks gain in advance.
When you say 'won't do anything', it it a touchscreen that is unresponsive or are the touchpad and keyboard not responding ? Just out of interest, have you tried plugging in a standard USB keyboard / mouse to see if they work ?0 -
Where do I go now?
Back to your friendly neighbourhood repairman.
Get him to investigate further and provide a report confirming that the fault is inherent.
An inherent fault is one that was present at the time of sale but not necessarily apparent at that time.
In other words, it needs to be shown that you haven't caused the problem, nor is it due to fair wear and tear.
If the report is in your favour then PCW should not only provide the remedy, but also refund any cost involved in getting the report.
Of course, and it needs to be said, if the report does not show the fault to be inherent, then PCW do not have to provide a remedy, neither do they have to cover the cost of the report.0 -
It's either going to be one of two things.
Either a software fault, or a hardware fault.
Backup all your data and restore the system (Without knowing the make & model I can't tell you) back to factory settings.
If that works then you have no further reason to contact PcWorld/Currys as it was a software fault, if it doesn't work it's a hardware fault and you either need to contact PcWorld/Currys for them to arrange a repair under SoGA (You will have to pay £50 for the diagnostics and if inherent it will be refunded) or you can get a independent report done stating it was inherent.0 -
Ok thanks Ill get a report done0

The problem you have op, is that could be caused by many things. Lots mainly software related, corrupt drivers, viruses, etc, etc.
Restoring wont solve all software problems, particularly nasty viruses, neither will a reinstall believe it or not.
It could also be lack of ram, etc.
So be aware that you may not get the result you're looking for, is there no manufacturer warranty you can use first?0 -
backup your data using a boot cd, and factory restore it.!!

Why are you getting a report done ?
Just take it back to PCW so they can send to the manufacturer for repair , they have gave you duff information anything under a year they will sort out for you, even if that means sending to manufacturer for repair, you certainly don't need a report with PCW under a year old0 -
