Unless someone in the new firm is willing to put in writing a firm job offer was made but fell through at the last minute.
And why wouldn't they do that? If they offered a job and that had to take it back due to loss of contract or similar, surely they would feel bad that OP gave up their job and now have nothing to go to and only too happy to write whatever would help them?

define 'confident'? Did you have a firm offer of employment? If so then you have Just Cause (depending on a couple of other variables) If not, then you maybe don't
Define 'last minute'? is this before or after you had finished the other job?
Give me some timescales - when the new job was offered, the prospective start date, when you handed in your notice, when you left your old job0 -

No idea why a decent company wouldn't. But 1 man outfits's can be somewhat unreliable in many areas. Not every business which employs people adhere's to the rules or common decency.0
