  • Sorry but just want to add a man's view on this.

Not getting into the rights or wrongs or responsibilities of it all but more out of curiosity. I thought once a child reached 18 then the parent no longer had to legally pay Child Maintenance as after all they are no longer a child????

Why do you suspect he will stop paying? it's seems obvious from what you write that it is the idea of him giving the ex-wife the money that is the issue as he thinks she is benefiting from it rather than the child.. If the father has a "big Influence" over the child why would he jeopardise this by not supporting him financially as would be agreed? If he did then surely it would sour the relationship so the child would then take him back to court. At the end of the day the "child" is now 18 so really no longer a child, They could get married and have kids so maybe the mother needs to let go of the Apron strings a bit and let the child live in the big bad world a bit for themselves but be there for support when needed....

    Just a thought !

So the child would end up with very little money to survive on at uni (will now be living away from home).

She'll find many other students are managing without money from their parents.

Think they might want to have a name re-think....... something like Adult Maintenance !! I know it is only right for a parent to support their "CHILD" but 20 !!!!! Seriously !! Ever heard of a JOB!!

It only applies to "children" from 16 - 19 (and 364 days) who are in full-time non-advanced education and where one parent is still getting CB, unless there is a court ruling specifying extended support.
