Sky TV problems

So my parents recently moved from a house to a 13th floor flat. They were previously with Virgin for TV but they couldn't get it in the new place so they opted to go with Sky.
They have got Sky+ HD so they could record TV but here is where the problems start.

They can't record a program unless they are watching it.
They called Sky to find out why and were told it's because they need another cable coming from the dish to the box. But Sky refuse to do anything about it stating something about terms and conditions. They even told my parents to ring the company that Sky had to install it to see if they would sort it.

What is the point of having Sky+ if you can't record programs that you aren't watching? Surely they have the right to expect this basic feature?

Is there anything they can do about it? And if not does anyone know of a splitter they can buy that may work?

You will be able to record program's you're not watching but hey need to be on the same polarity and frequency band.
    But that isn't really acceptable

    Can't the landlord sort it?

It's probably a communal dish causing the problem. Unfortunately, it sounds as if each flat gets a single feed from it. Sky can't do anything about this situation, their hands are tied.

If you wanted a twin feed then you needed to specify it at install time.
As above, if it's communal and the feeds are pre-installed, you can only talk to the management company about it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You need a twin feed to have fully functioning Sky +. If the flat had a Sky system installed before Sky + existed, then there will only be a single feed.

It isn't Sky's problem/responsibility; as someone has already said, speak to the management/landlord. It will probably be a very expensive job to get another feed installed !
  • Thanks for clearing the issue up everybody. I guess they will have to deal with it until the contract is up.
