Virginmedia early disconnection fees

I took out a Virginmedia package in Sept '12 for cable broadband, tv and phone. I went for the cheapest option which was half price for the first 6 months, but was an 18 month contract. Currently I am paying £40.99 for these services.

Due to my circumstances I have found myself having to move and as my contract with Vmedia is not up, I phoned them to arrange transfer of these services to my new address.

First problem is that my new address, which is still zone 2 in London so not exactly out in the sticks (I've moved from west to east London), can not be reached by fibre optic cables.

I was told that they would be happy to set up a dsl service for broadband and phone, but they would no longer be able to provide TV. Obviously, this would mean a slower connection and the loss of all my TV channels. Still they want to charge me about £28 for this service.

I told them that I was not happy with the reduction in internet speed and the loss of TV and that it would be cheaper for me to get a package with another company so I wanted to cancel the contract. They said that it would be fine, but I'd have to pay an £84 early disconnection fee.

So now I either stick with Vmedia, get a reduced package whilst still paying quite a significant amount for it plus find another provider for my tv. Or I pay the quite significant early disconnection fee and go for a package with another company.

Is there anyway I can get out of this contract without having to pay excessive disconnection charges?

you signed up for the 18month contract and it was your decision to move to an new house without virgin available.

so why shouldn't you have to pay ? afterall, it was your fault, not virgins. At least they are not asking you to pay for the whole remaining contract
  • That's quite a reasonable early disconnection fee imo
