I was wondering if someone could refresh my memory on how the £5 reward works with the Clarity card for those who qualified for it.

I know you have to spend £300 in a statement period to earn £5, but do you still have to fulfil the reward conditions on the current account (which used to be pay in £1,000/month, recently £750/month) ?

    Yes, you need to fulfil both.

    At the moment I have got it for spending abroad, but with the impending launch of their cashback scheme I thought there may be a possibility of using it more regularly (especially with the £5 reward still running).

    May make a couple of small purchases to keep it live, not sure where they stand on dormant accounts, but I do not really want to lose it.

    Currently using a Barclaycard World (ex-Egg with no annual fee) for the straight 1%. Cannot be bothered with Amex.

    I don't believe this is correct.

    The conditions say:
    11 REWARD PAYMENT

    11.1 If you meet the requirements set out in condition 11.2, then for any statement period in which you:-
    (a) make at least £300 of Purchases (once any Purchases refunded in that period have beend deducted);
    (b) stay within your credit limit; and
    (c) make your minimum monthly payment;

    you will qualify for a £5 credit to your account in the following month. The credit will not be treated as a payment to your account under these conditions.

    11.2 To be eligible for the reward set out in condition 11.1, you must, at the time you enter into this agreement:-
    (a) hold a Halifax current account and pay in £1,000 or more each month;
    (b) use our switching service to move your current account to a Halifax Current Account and agree to pay in £1,000 or more each month;
    (c) open or hold a Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account.

    The requirement on paying £1k/month into a Halifax current account is at the time you enter into this agreement. The only requirement to get the £5 monthly reward is a £300 spend.

    I questioned this a few months ago, where I agreed with rb10's view above.

    I put it to the test. Last time I paid in >£1000 in a month was May. Still received my £5 every month since, including just a few days ago.

    Last month I spent £303 on my Clarity card, but because of £5 credit, my payment was £298, I have not got the £5 reward, usually credited on the 16th of the month. Looking at the T&C above this cannot be right !!!

    Those T&Cs don't state that it's payable on the 16th of the month.

    Since they moved the credit cards over to the Lloyds system a couple of months ago, I find that it seems to take them a day or two longer to credit the £5. Last month I spent £300.10 and with the £5 reward from the previous month made my bill £295.10 but I still got the £5 reward this month.

    Thanks 'King of Fools' for the reassurance, Weekend also must have played its part. My credit card month starts on the 16th and finishes on the 15th of the month.
    So when I did not see £5 reward added, yesterday morning, I called Halifax. They were very helpful, and checked my account, she confirmed I should have got it, so she took the initiative and added £5 as an ex-gratia payment. Today, I checked my account again, all the data of 16th to 19th appeared. £5 reward was added as well, dated 16th. I rang the help desk again and informed that now I have £5 reward as well as ex gratia. The response was ex gratia is as it say ex gratia, and it is yours to keep. very generous of them. Thanks Halifax (and team).

    You should still use the Halifax card if you regularly spend more than £300 a month on credit cards. Put the first £300 on the Halifax card, and the cashback is up to 1.66%. I normally manage to spend between £300 and £320 a month on Halifax, then revert to Capital One for 1% on everything else.
  • Just to confirm,
    The "Halifax Clarity Reward Credit Card" is still available. I applied in branch on 4th July, the pin and card arrived before the 11th July. The APR on my account is 17.9%.

    "Eligible customers can apply for the Clarity Rewards Card by visiting one of our branches."

    source: halifax.co.uk/creditcards/low-rate-no-fee/clarity-card/

    "To be eligible for the account you must;
    > Hold a halifax current account and pay in £1000 or more each month
    > Use the switching service to move your current account to a Halifax Current Account and agree to pay in £1000 or more each month
    > Open or hold a Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account

    To receive the £5 credit you must;
    > Make at least £300 of Purchases (excludes refunded purchases)
    > Stay within your credit limit
    > Make the minimum monthly payment"

    source: the account T&C's I received in the branch.

    If you spend £300, then get the £5 credit, then it is equivalent to a cashback rate of 1.67%.
