Daffodils & tulips. Where get quality at a great price. Bulk purchase if cheap.
I am looking for a large purchase of daffodils and tulips as I have large front & back gardens. Where can get good quality bulbs at a great low price?

I bought a 5kg bag of daffs from lidl at the weekend. They had tulips too but not on such a good deal (I can't remember what we paid for them)
I also got some tulips from morrisons the other day, I think it was £2 fr 12/15 bulbsI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. I was at 'The Range' over the weekend and I noticed that they had two three kilo bags of daffodil bulbs for £6 (or £3.99 each, I think). I can't speak for the quality of the bulbs but I have bought tulips and hyacinths from there in the past and they were ok.0

Forget all that, your local market town market is the place to shop, if you can't get 15-20 bulbs for a quid you aren't trying,
;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Good idea, but not everyone has local marketsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I've bought mine from here: http://www.jparkers.co.uk/plant-1006998-yl-1/tulip-flag-tulip-collection/
Not cheap but good quality and I've found that in the past the cheaper bulbs that I've bought haven't flowered.
My daffs came from here: www.jparkers.co.uk/plant-1006998-yl-1/tulip-flag-tulip-collection/
And I bought these grape hyacinths: http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/muscari-armeniacum/classid.1000000283/4.30: conduct pigeon orchestra...0 -
I agree with Parkers for bulbs. They might not be the cheapest but the quality is good. I have had some gorgeous colour tulips from them in the past which you cannot get on the high street, they do what I call "designer" tulips which look expensive and good enough to grace any front garden pot.0

Thanks... I have just looked at their wonderful flowers. It says you need to remove the tulips each year & change soil. Is this necessary? I was hoping to just plant them and just water when needed the leave them there 4 years... How do you look after your tulips??“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson

Daffodils like to go in earlier in the year (now onwards); tulips later (October/November). Daffodils tend to come back year after year and give a better display each time; tulips tend to give declining returns. In fact, there's a case for thinking of tulips like bedding plants - a one-year display. Anything longer is a bonus.
With this in mind, my money-saving tip is to wait as long as possible before you buy your tulips. Many places will reduce prices as it gets closer to Christmas. For tulips this doesn't matter if the bulbs are still firm and the weather such that you can plant them. You can take the same approach with daffodils but you won't get a great display in the first year, although they should come back stronger in years 2, 3, etc.
Mail order this approach is trickier, because you can't see what you're buying, but last year I bought hundreds of tulips/daffodils in December for less than £20. The bulbs were OK and the tulips gave a terrific display this spring. Daffodils were a bit feeble, but hoping they'll improve.0 -
And on the subject of Parkers, I don't know if there are any restrictions on who can use it, but if you are after seriously large numbers of bulbs, they have a wholesale site http://www.dutchbulbs.co.uk/ which looks cheaper provided you are ordering in bulk.0
