Here's a curveball for you... Fiat 500L
We were looking to replace my wife's uneconomical CRV with something that did more than 25mpg and cost less than £260 in VED.
We took our springer spaniel to the showrooms. Cars we looked at included:
Hyundai iX35 (overpriced)
Kia Sportage (7 year warranty has a lot of exclusions)
Mazda CX-5 (dubious build quality)
Nissan Juke (too small inside)
Nissan Quashquaique (overpriced)
Skoda Yeti (hard to get hold of)
Subaru XV (too agricultural and not cheap to run)
VW Tiguan (overpriced)
.
I've had four Mazdas (including two now) and done a lot of miles in them (getting on for 200,000) and the only thing ever to go wrong with any of them was a split sun visor in an RX-8. IME build quality and reliability is a major plus of Mazdas. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
Nissan Qashqai (overpriced)
VW Tiguan (overpriced)
.
It could be argued that all cars in this class are expensive (small crossover) why? oh yes, because they are popular, I believe the Qashqai is the top seller in it's class, maybe it is a bit expensive, however deals can be had, I bought a 360 dci new, list was £22k I paid £16k and traded in an 08 Vectra.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Don't be offended, some people wouldn't know build quality if it slapped them in the face.
It's no different to the slimy salesmen that sell them, some people will think "wow that guy was so nice, he gave us a great deal" and some will think "that guy was a creep, he must think I was born yesterday".
At the end of the day, a car is designed to look good (usually better than it is), to see the quality you have see past all the chrome effect trim and fancy plastic knobs.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Nissan Juke beautiful car)))
I like the white color
Not sure what this person is doing....... Only 2 posts on the forum, neither very descriptive/helpful. Suspect future spammer, but I apologise if im wrong. Perhaps they do live in Georgia and don't speak much English.
Their name is that of a car rentals company, they have the link to said company in their profile..... Which wouldn't be so bad, but they're linked in some way to rental company SIXT.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Totally agree with you.
When we started looking, I decided to draw up a full list of cars, then spec them up (new) to get the features we wanted. If we went for a small car then 2WD was fine, we would accept the limitations and rely on neighbours to get us in and out of the house in winter. (we don't live in a town)
If we went for a bigger car, then we were going 4WD etc. No point in having all the drawbacks of a small crossover with none of the benefits!
So then we considered the fuel economy, VED, insurance, etc.
That brought us to a list of cars with the features we wanted/needed and that we could afford, then we went off searching for the deals.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

Here's a curveball for you... Fiat 500L
We were looking to replace my wife's uneconomical CRV with something that did more than 25mpg and cost less than £260 in VED.
We took our springer spaniel to the showrooms. Cars we looked at included:
Hyundai iX35 (overpriced)

Mazda CX-5 (dubious build quality)
Nissan Juke (too small inside)
Nissan Quashquaique (overpriced)
Skoda Yeti (hard to get hold of)
Subaru XV (too agricultural and not cheap to run)
VW Tiguan (overpriced)
And then two more "normal" sized cars:
Alfa Mito (wife didn't want the same brand of car as me, but we both liked it)
Fiat 500L (dog loved it, wife thought it was quirky but really liked it)
So, I'd suggest looking at the Fiat 500L or Skoda Yeti.
You bang on about how expensive and overpriced half these cars are compared to the 500 L, but the 500 L is in a different segment altogether - I would hardly class the Fiat as a crossover, more of a C-Max or Scenic alternative.
A lot of those cars are a fair bit of money, but the OP is looking for a car like the IX20/Kia Venga not a Tiguan or Yeti. If you read the OP it says that the IX35 would probably be too big a car for them.
And I am slightly baffled by the comment on Mazda and build quality - still, each to their own.:o0 -
Um, just above where I mentioned the Mito I said:
"And then two more "normal" sized cars:"
I wouldn't consider the Fiat or the Alfa as crossovers!
The OP mentioned the iX35 and the Juke, two cars which we also considered. If someone is looking at the iX35 then the Yeti most certainly is NOT more money, and price wise the Yeti is pretty close to the Juke (both start sub 15k and go up to over 20k)
The Mazda comments were based on:
1. Driving an RX-8 for a while
2. Asking local mechanics1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -
What about a Dacia Duster if you are looking for a small(ish) crossover?0

The Juke seems to be more style over substance & is not particularly practical.
"not particularly practical" is putting it quite politely - it's wildly impractical - and that's why I love mine
I've got a 1.5DCI Accenture (Premium) - oh, in white, so that should please Naniko
Cons:
* Tiny boot for such a large car, and extremely high, making it hard to get heavy stuff into - I'd suggest this on its own probably rules the thing out for OP.
* Could have more headroom in the back
* Very stiff and bumpy ride...don't think the "high" suspension and big wheels means it will be a smooth ride
* Expensive tyres!
Pros:
* Acceptable space with the seats down - big enough to fit my bike in, which is the main thing.
* Spacious in the front - I'm 6'2" and it's nice not to have my head touching the roof.
* Great fun to drive...The stiff suspension means it has very little roll, meaning you can throw it into corners much faster than you expect such a tall car to manage. (especially when the steering's in "sport" mode) Good pull when the turbo kicks in.
* Pleasingly economical - consistently manages mid 50s without being careful
* I like the style - especially the magic buttons that change function (and colour) when you change from "Climate" mode. "Fuel tank" centre console is cool and I like all the stats on the on-board computer - daily fuel consumption, G-force monitor etc.
Whether it's the car for you is easy to determine.
1) Would a micra be big enough for you?
2) Would you like a giant, ugly, micra on stilts?
If you answer yes to both, the juke's ideal
FWIW, I drove the note for a while when the Juke was in the garage - quite the opposite...very practical, but incredibly plain.0 -
Thanks all, some really interesting points there, just further confused me!
I'm taking my i10 into Hyundai this Friday and know them well in there, so I'll ask for the ix20 to play with for the weekend - that's a terrific idea and not something I would have thought was possible until today.
Still lust after the !!!!!! Juke (don't know why!) but also like the look of that Skoda Yeti, so will research further.
Really hate the Fiat 500.
And incidentally, I'm not one of the school mum brigade wanting a fancy 4x4 to parade in front of the other mums. My babies are now 16 and 17. I'm a permanent Taxi for them, so wanted a bit of luxury and comfort for MYSELF whilst being an unpaid chauffeur...:p0
