Sky - remote recording with multiroom

Everything i've read seems to be related to remote recording on your main box. That's not what we want to do.

Here's the situation -

* I live at home with my mum & she's the account holder for Sky.
* She has the main box in the living room
* We have multiroom in my room. This is the box i want to use to remote record.

* My mum has an account (with which she can log in on the Sky website).

I believe i needed to make a separate account with Sky so that i could remote record. I did this & used the (multiroom) 9-digit number on the view card in the sign up process

I went to the Sky+ app on my iPhone to remote record something - it didn't work.

I'm clearly missing a step/some steps. What do i need to do to make this happen?

Did it record on the main box? Just wondering if you may need to uninstall the app then reinstall again, as it may be linked to the main box.

Log into Sky.com and look for "tv settings" in My Sky. You can choose which viewing card receives your remote record requests there.

  • no it didn't record on any box

Thanks basil - i'll see if that works in the morning.
  • I've just this minute activated the remote record through Sky's website.

I'm just wondering how this works though -

You have your mobile which will connect either via 3G or WiFi. The Sky box itself is connected just direct to the phone line, and not via WiFi to the home network - so how does it actually work?

It gets a signal over the satellite downlink, AFAIK.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Just to clarify, there is no need to open a separate account in order to set remote recordings for Multi-Room. Indeed, it's only possible to select the box to be recorded to from the original account once Remote Record is activated. Once a given box is set to record it then becomes the default decoder for Remote Record until it is manually changed by the account holder. It's only possible to set one box per recording, it will not record on more than one box.
The command to record is sent via the satellite, so no internet or telephone connection to the box is required.
  • Cheers guys. Did it & tested it out this morning - worked fine.

Shame you can't set up your multi room to record though. The main room is used by my mum & sister generally, whereas the multi room is mine & the wifes. We're the ones more likely to require remote recording, so at least it works out well for us. Shame it can't work for the other box since my sister might need it at times.

You've misunderstood, it's perfectly possible to alternate between boxes. The only thing you can't do is use Remote Record to record a single programme to both boxes. The only way around this is to record one showing to the main box and then set the other box to record a later repeat showing.

If i understand right then to record on the 'other' box, i'd need to go back into the settings on the Sky website, but then this is just an inconvenience.

I could be out & for e.g. i'll be at the gym & see an advert for a program & think that sounds good, i'll set it to record before i forget ... on MY box.

My sister could be out on the same day, one of her friends could say - are you watching such & such later. My sister could want to record it, but she'd not be able to record it on the main box, as the account is set up to record to 'my' box.

Yes, it's impossible only to record the same showing of a given programme to both boxes.

However, Planner Sharing between Multi-Room boxes is being trialled already, so it's likely to be a temporary glitch only.
