i don't want a contract, just a pay as you go for internet access, ie data, with the tethering

Depends on how much you actually need.
Ovivo Gazelle gives you 0.75G for free each month (Data Freedom) or 1.5G for £5.0 -
You might look at using a dongle, which avoids the hassle of searching for a package that includes tethering.
It is sometimes cheaper to buy a new pre-loaded SIM card from an eBay trader than to top up an existing one. In addition, the pre-loaded cards for 3 dongles typically last 3 months, as opposed to getting 30 days on a top up. I am not sure about cards for other networks.
I used a PAYG mobile and a separate PAYG dongle until a few months ago, then bit the bullet and took out a 30 day contract SIM with 3 on their "One Plan". The 30 day contract SIM is £18 per month, less than I was paying for the PAYG SIMs and with a huge increase in call, text and data allowance (and includes unlimited data use and tethering).0 -
thanks for all that, and yes i had considered a dongle, but a phone with tethering would be more useful to meFrozen_up_north wrote: »You might look at using a dongle, which avoids the hassle of searching for a package that includes tethering.

Yes i know about buying off ebay which can be quite cost effective
and yes i had looked at 3's one plan montkly contract at £18/month - seemed quite good to me.
now this may be wrong but i'm thinking i could dith my landline and broadband and use this one plan for calls and internet - only me and the wife when at home on the internet so it may work out cheaper.
anyone got further comments?
cheers
