Flight Diversion/Delay

In 2007, I was on a flight from Spain to Birmingham when it came to the attention of the flight attendant that there was a crack in one of the windows. The flight was diverted to Barcelona, where we remained grounded for about 3-4hrs. We were informed that there were no planes available to continue our journey and were transported to a hotel for the evening. The following morning we were taken back to the airport and arrived back in Birmingham a day later than expected.
I am aware that you cannot claim compensation if the situation was out of the airline's control, as was this, but it does not detract from the fact that we were still a day late.
Am I able to claim for this delay?
Thanks!
