Just really for a bit of word processing ( I have Microsoft office suite) and surfing. Also would like to be able to stream films through PLEX to my Now TV Box. Have got this set up on Netbook but keeps buffeting every few mins.

What is the difference between using a SP3 disc and the downloaded one that won't work?

This would be the Compaq Presario XP recovery disc with SP3 included.
A clean install with such a disc would effectively bring the machine back up to speed. Topping the RAM up to 1GB(if it isn't already there) would get the best out of it.
