ahhhh... do u want feedback here....??? I have some comments, but wasn't sure where to put them......
Ditto about not sure about the use.... is it for our TV planning, or our feedback (or both)0 -
"Its not particularly clear what the participant needs to do - for example - do you log things you are not/interested in advance or after you have watched them - and when you are finished for the day do you just log out?"
- It isn't necessary to log out for the day as your login will automatically timeout after a set period of inactivity.
- The user may log / rate programmes at any time in this system - the analogy that it is supposed to represent is an EPG on your television where you can search ahead to future programmes and rate them OR rate programmes you are currently watching OR programmes the system has recorded for you.
"1) The details/ratings page needs to be more user friendly - it's ok, just needs to be a little better organised."
Do you have any specific suggestions for the order of programme details? Should details appear in a popup window perhaps?
"2) Due to regional variations, a number of the programmes and times are not correct for my area. Not sure what you can do about that though?"
This is currently a limitation of the system in that TV guide data is being obtained for the BBC East Midlands/Central Calton area - to provide regional variations I would have to provide separate channel databases for each region which wasn't feasible given the time available and the amount of extra hosting space required. Well spotted though
"3)..."
These have been corrected now
"4) Can the font size be increased a little on the programme name/link to make it more legible?"
I will have a look at this tonight...
"Was there something about receiving a daily email when I signed up...or was I still half asleep "
Yes - I will try to have this working for the last 3 - 4 days of the trial (Friday, Sat, Sun, Monday) - should allow people to train the system on their preferences.
"Will you be able to extend this to add other channels, (I don't have Sky but do have other digital channels) such as BBC3 & 4, ITV3, etc,?"
Yes - this is definitely possible, maybe when the dissertation is handed in and the exams are over I will look into adding extra channels in my spare time.
I looked at which channels currently have the highest audience share (excluding News and Sports channels) and chose the top 8 (5 terrestrial analogue + 3 multichannel) as a basis to start from.
Thanks for all the feedback so far - keep it coming!0 -
Yep - comments here please.Amba_Gambla wrote:ahhhh... do u want feedback here....??? I have some comments, but wasn't sure where to put them......

Maybe if I give a bit of background info it'll help you to see the use of the system. The aim of my dissertation is to produce an intelligent PVR which monitors the users preferences (from what TV programmes they watch and record and from ratings they give programmes they have watched or recorded). From these observations the system should then automatically record programmes that it belives the user will like to watch - like Tivo and perhaps Sky+ to some extent. The difference being that this system relies only on the information that you provide (as opposed to Tivo which to some extent places users into demographics). Short of sending you all a PVR to use with the software loaded on to it I needed a way of testing if the "clever" bit of the system I have developed works - hence the website.
The website has approximately 6 weeks of TV data on there at the moment, to allow you to rate programmes that you have watched / watch regularly etc. How you chose to do this (i.e. rating everything under the sun vs. only logging programmes you have watched / recorded) is up to you I guess - although one thing I will point out from the instructions is that the system does need you to give SOME negative ratings for programmes for it to be able to 'figure out' your preferences. As programmes marked to watch and record are automatically given positive ratings you need to tell the system if you watched a programme and didn't like it. An analogy to this would be if you turned over to a programme (say the Eurovision contest
) and watched it for a few minutes and then changed the channel because it was so awful - with the real system it would log that you have watched the programme and you would give it a negative rating before turning over.

I have now closed registrations for invitation code msecomp - if anyone wants to try the system out without being eligible for the prize just send me a PM.0

Hi,
I really like the idea of this, however I do have a couple of suggestions.
First one is I made a mistake about one of the programmes I wanted to watch ie I clicked on "watch this programme" afterwards I realized it was the wrong programme but I can't seem to change it/rectify it. In other words can you make your system a bit more idiot proof
Secondly, I find the system a bit difficult to navigate. I do a tv survey every day for GFK with theirs the programmes are listed from top to bottom (rather than left to right). I do find their system easier - however that could be because I'm just used to it.
Good luck with your dissertation.Low carbing vegetarian. Aiming for 50-100g carbs per day0 -
Although I have marked programmes I really want to see/ record, they don't show up as different from the programmes the system thinks I'm going to like! I'd prefer a different colour for those I choose, or - as suggested by your earlier comment - a symbol that indicates it is my actual choice. Just because I like one 'reality' show doesn't mean I like all of them, for example. I want to record 'Supersize Me' but have no interest in 'Death of a !!!!!! Star' and yet they are both highlighted as 'Highly Recommended'0

To metro_gnome: It has something that I had intended to do but eventually ran out of time I'm afraid...
To everyone else watching the thread - just to let you know that I will be publishing a URL to the questionnaire mentionned in the first post sometime tomorrow afternoon/early evening. I will need all questionnaires to be completed by Monday at 4pm which will give you just under 48 hours to find 10 mins or so to spare to complete the questionnaire. Hope this is OK with everyone.0 -
